10 Great 2008 Movies
The 10 great 2008 movies had many films deserving of the title. The abundance of quality movies convince the Academy Awards to expand the number of nominees to ten films the next year. With superheroes, underdogs and Presidents, these movies proved unique while never losing the quality cinemagoers sought.
“Slumdog Millionaire” – Danny Boyle directed this Oscar winning Bollywood film, one of the great 2008 movies. Dev Patel plays a young street kid from the slums of Mumbai who gets the chance to be a contestant on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” When he starts to win, authorities arrest him on charges of cheating.
“The Dark Knight” – In the second “Batman” movie for Christopher Nolan, he created one of the great 2008 movies. Batman finds himself in opposition with a villain known as The Joker and tries to help the current district attorney clean up Gotham City. The late Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his portrayal of The Joker.
“Wall-E” – Pixar created one of the great 2008 movies, centering on a small robot created to help clean up a devastated planet Earth after an ecological disaster. The movie is unique for an animated film in that it has little in dialogue but retains plenty of heart.
“The Wrestler” – Darren Aronofsky directs one of the great 2008 movies, starring Mickey Rourke. Rourke plays an aging professional wrestler who no longer wrestles in sold out stadiums but still puts his body on the line in small halls for smaller audiences. The movie shows what happens when life passes you by.
“Let the Right One In” – This Swedish horror thriller was one of the great 2008 movies. The movie tells the story of a young boy, bullied at school, who befriends a new girl in his apartment building who also happens to be a vampire. The movie received an American remake in 2010.
“Pineapple Express” – James Franco and Seth Rogan star in this action-comedy, one of the great 2008 movies. Rogan plays a pothead who witnesses a murder and goes on the run. He drags his drug dealer into the mess and the two end of trying to stay alive while the murderers and police force are tracking them down.
“Iron Man” – Robert Downey Jr. created one of the most fun superheroes in cinema in one of the great 2008 movies. The movie is an origin story as businessman Tony Stark is kidnapped. He builds a suit of armor and escapes, soon improving it to become the superher Iron Man.
“Doubt” – Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Meryl Streep and Viola Davis all received Oscar nominations in their roles in one of the great 2008 movies. The film is a religious drama centering on a Catholic school and a teacher who believes the priest in charge is molesting a small boy.
“Curious Case of Benjamin Button” – David Fincher creates this period drama, one of the great 2008 movies. Brad Pitt stars as Benjamin Button, a baby born as an old man who ages in reverse. The movie follows his life as he grows younger while those around him grow old.
“W.” – Oliver Stone made his third movie about a U.S. president in one of the great 2008 movies. This time he approached a president who was still in office as he created a film based around the life of George W. Bush. Josh Brolin played the president in the movie, that didn’t pass judgment on the man, remaining fairy uncontroversial.
