10 Good Funny Movies
The list of 10 good funny movies includes classics from decades ago and more modern movies. Some of America’s all-time best funnymen and women are represented here, in a selection of flicks that at one time or another probably had you rolling in the aisles. A funny movie is a great diversion, and these are some of the best.
"Young Frankenstein." This good funny movie is a Mel Brooks classic, starring Gene Wilder as the descendant of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein. The most laugh-out-loud moment in this movie comes when Wilder’s character and the Monster dance and sing to “Putting on the Ritz.”
"There’s Something About Mary." This movie defined comedy for a generation, as the Farrell Brothers brought together Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon in a romp that was perhaps best-remembered for it’s gross out scene of Diaz’s character styling her hair with…something that belonged to Stiller. The movie was on the American Film Institute's list of funniest movies of all time.
"Groundhog Day." This movie stars the great comedian Bill Murray in a situation where he lives the same day—Groundhog Day—over and over and over. Hilarity ensues as he tries all kinds of tricks to get “unstuck.” This good funny movie has a moral message, but certainly isn’t preachy.
"Shawn of the Dead." This good funny movie is a hysterical take off on the classic zombie horror movie. Starring film friends Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the duo must ward off a city full of zombies while Pegg’s character tries to patch things up with a girlfriend. You’ll never look at zombies the same way after this movie.
"Good Morning, Vietnam." Legendary comedian Robin Williams got an Oscar nod for his role as a real-life deejay in Vietnam during the war. Williams ad-libbed most scenes, and his skill for this comedic craft is evident, as he keeps audiences in stitches, despite the movie’s attempt to tackle a difficult issue.
"Dr. Strangelove." This Stanley Kubrick classic featured that estimable Peter Sellers in a variety of roles. A good funny movie, it tackled the issue of nuclear war and proliferation with a lot of absurd humor, right down to Slim Pickens riding a missile, setting off the end of the world.
"Some Like it Hot." This classic good funny movie from the 1950’s had an amazing cast of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon and was directed by Billy Wilder. Curtis and Lemmon dress in drag for much of the movie, trying to escape gangsters. The American Film Institute calls it the funniest film of all time.
"Borat." Sacha Baron Cohen portrays a character named Borat in this satirical good funny move. He moves about the United States in character, a Kazakhstani ambassador, who puts people in unwittingly funny and embarrassing positions. The movie broke ground with its format and made Cohen rich.
"Spinal Tap." This good funny movie falls into the “mockumentary” category and comes from Christopher Guest. The actors portray a fictional rock band being followed by a camera crew, with all scenes being improvised. It is one of the classic comedies of the last 40 years.
"Wet, Hot American Summer." This film didn’t generate a lot of money but has become a cult classic. Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce Paul Rudd and Christopher Meloni lead an ensemble cast that oversees a summer camp. Bizarre, hysterical and off-the-wall, this may be the best comedy you never saw.
