These top 10 classic western movies have it all from gun slingers to tumbleweeds. Every great western can mix a time lost with characters that bring you in. Since most westerns don't have a lot in the way of special effects, they have to be able to capture the audience through characters that bring you back to a time lost. They can do this through their attitude, their clothing and their actions.

  1. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" - "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was released in 1969 and directed by George Roy Hill. This movie tells the story of two partners who happen to be bank robbers. The main characters in this movie are played be Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
  2. "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" – "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" was released in 1966 and directed by Sergio Leone. This movie tells the story of three gunslingers trying to find a fortune of gold. The main characters in this movie are played by Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach.
  3. "High Noon" - "High Noon" was released in 1952 and directed by Fred Zinnermann. This movie tells the story of a gun slinging marshal that goes up against a band of ruffians. The main characters in this movie are played by Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly.
  4. "Little Big Man" - "Little Big Man" was released in 1970 and directed by Arthur Penn. This story follows a caucation boy who was raised by the Cheyenne, showing a comedic view between the American pioneers and the Native Americans in the 1900's. The main characters in this movie are played by Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway, Jeff Corey and Richard Mulligan.
  5. "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" – "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" was released in 1948 directed by John Huston. This movie tells the story of a group of three who go looking for gold. The main characters are played by Humphry Bogart, Tim Holt and Walter Huston,
  6. "The Magnificent Seven" – "The Magnificent Seven" was released in 1960 and directed by John Sturges. This movie tells the story of a group of gunslingers who protect a Mexican village. The main characters are played by Eli Wallach, Yul Brynner, and Charles Bronson.
  7. "The Wild Bunch" – "The Wild Bunch"  was released in 1969 and directed by Sam Peckinpah. This movie tells the story of an aging outlaw gang trying to find a way to survive in changing times. The main characters are played by William Holden and Ernest Borgnine.
  8. "The Shootist" - "The Shootist" was released in 1976 and directed by Don Siegel. This movie tells the story of a gunslinger who tries to find medical attention with out being seen or killed. The main characters in this film are played by Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, James Stewart.
  9. "Unforgiven" - "Unforgiven" was released in 1992 and directed by Clint Eastwood. This movie tells the story of the last job of William Munny. The main characters in this film are played by Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris.
  10. "Silverado" - "Silverado" was released in 1985 and directed by Lawrence Kasdan. This film tells the story of four misfits that all meet while gathering work out side of Silverado on a ranch. The main characters are played by Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover and Kevin Costner.
