  1. “The Hangover” Making $277,322,503 this movie grossed the most in its rating for the year. This is a comedy about a crazy bachelor party in Los Vegas. The script was based off of the real-life adventures of the filmmakers’, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. It won a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy.
  2. “Inglorious Basterds” This war film grossed $120,540,719. It is a fictional story that tells of two plans to assassinate the Nazi Germany political leadership. The movie was directed by Quentin Tarantino. 
  3. “District 9” One of the most anticipated movies of the year, this science fiction film grossed $115,646,235. It was rated R for the violence and language. The movie was also one of the grossest alien films ever. The movie is about an alien race that is stranded on Earth and the internment camp the creatures are forced to live in.
  4. “It’s Complicated” This romantic comedy grossed $112,735,375. The movie is about a divorced couple, who after 10 years seem to reconcile things in the bedroom. Problem is ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin” is now remarried. Jane (Meryl Streep) tries to fight the relationship but then things get even more complicated when she develops a love interest in another man.
  5. “Paranormal Activity” This R rated horror flick blew audiences away. Many considered it the best scary movie of the year. The film centers on the haunting of a young couple and their attempt to document the events.
  6. “Watchmen” It’s not often that a superhero film is one of the best movies of the year but this r rated movie grossed $107,509,799. The movie was based on comic books by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The plot is set in an alternate history of 1985 at the height of the Cold War with a group of superheroes.
  7. “Public Enemies” This crime drama grossed $97,104,620 and is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34”. The movie is set during the Great Depression and tells the final years of bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp).
  8. “The Ugly Truth” This romantic comedy grossed $88,915,214. The plot of this rated R movie centers around Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) and the failing morning show she produces. After a bad date she calls in on a late night TV dating show called “The Ugly Truth” and got in an argument with the show’s host. She later tries to use him to save her show.
  9. “Up in the Air” Grossing $83,823,381 this comedy is an adaptation of the 2001 novel by Walter Kim. The movie follows the travels of a corporate downsizer Ryan Bingham (George Clooney).
  10. “Zombieland” This is another comedy that is rated R for its dark humor. The movie earned $75,590,286. It followed the misadventures of four survivors that were thrown together by chance. The movie was such a success that there is talk of a 3D sequel.
