10 Best New Movies On DVD 2008

With most films coming in at between 90 and 120 minutes, nobody wants to sit through a bad film. Fortunately, we have movie critics to help us avoid this very problem. The following list of 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008, all received an average rating of at least 90% from critics.  

  1. "The Wrestler." "The Wrestler" is a movie about retired professional wrestler, Randy "The Ram" Robinson, and his complicated relationship with his daughter and his former success. The movie earns a spot on the 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008 in large part because of a stand-out performance from Micky Rourke, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role.
  2. "The Cove." The first documentary on the list of 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008, "The Cove" won the Oscar for Best Documentary. The movie is equally heartbreaking and informative as it explores a team of activists trying to save dolphins from a hidden cove in Japan.
  3. "Rogue." Critics are generally hard on horror movies. However, "Rogue" makes the list of 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008 because of its intelligent story line and memorable performances. The movies follows an American journalist, played by Michael Vartan, as he encounters a man-eating crocodile while on assignment in the Australian outback.
  4. "Happy-Go-Lucky." The first comedy to make the list of 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008, "Happy-Go-Lucky" tells the story of Poppy, a free-spirited primary school teacher. The movies was directed by Mike Leigh, who is best known for his 2004 movie Vera Drake.
  5. "Hurt Locker." It's a pretty safe bet that you when a film wins the Oscar for Best Picture , it will make the list of 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008 The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that follows an elite Army bomb squad during the war in Iraq.
  6. "Alien Raiders." The second horror movie to make the 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008 list, "Alien Raiders" takes place in a grocery store in Arizona. This may not sound terribly exciting, but add an army of rogue scientists, flesh eating aliens, and plenty of guns, and you've got one of the 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008.
  7. "Transsiberian." "Transsiberian" stars Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer as an American couple who encounters a mysterious couple and a dangerous Russian detective while on a train from Beijing to Moscow. 
  8. "Trouble the Water." Perhaps the most somber movie to make the 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008 list, "Trouble the Water" is a documentary that explores the impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. Critic Wally Hammond of Time Out notes that the movie is "Essential, startling, and distressing."
  9. "Gake No Ue No Ponyo (Ponyo)." "Ponyo," the only foreign film to make the list of 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008, tells the story of a goldfish and her quest to become human. The movie is animated and perfect for families.
  10. "Dark Knight." Perhaps the most well-known movie on the list of 10 best new movies on DVD in 2008, "Dark Knight" is the latest movie about DC Comics super hero Batman. The film is respected for its intelligence and grittiness. It achieved special attention for the stirring performance of Christian Bale, who died while filming the movie.
