The 10 best holiday movies are universal favorites. Pick the 10 best holiday movies and play holiday movie trivia with your girlfriend for a movie-at-home-date. Stoke up the fireplace, stir a shot of rum in the hot chocolate, pour melted butter over the fresh popcorn, and settle back with your girl, because everyone loves holiday movies.

  1. "It's a Wonderful Life" The classic Christmas movie stars James Stewart, Donna Reed and crotchety Lionel Barrymore,( yes related to Drew) in believable larger than life characters. The movie centers around George Bailey, played by Stewart, as small-town citizen, who relinquished big ideas to travel as a world class architect to work in the family's struggling Bank and Loan company. After money is missing (stolen by Barrymore) George, contemplating suicide, acquires a bumbling angel to help him realize he has a truly wonderful life. It's easy to see how the movie, sentimental, with gripping universal themes, remains a classic.
  2. "Holiday Affair" The movie was a spin-vehicle for Robert Mitchum to present a nice-guy image after skirmishes with the law. Starring Janet Leigh as a young pretty widow and single mom who's afraid to love again with Wendell Corey as the rival long-suffering suitor, it qualifies as a romantic holiday comedy.
  3. "White Christmas" Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney and Virginia Mayo star in this New England holiday movie. The dance and song numbers are outstanding by Crosby, Clooney and Mayo, while Kaye is hilarious. The movie of course, features its title song.
  4. "A Christmas Story" Ralphie played by Billingslsey dreams of owning a BB gun and campaigns to get one. Narrated by the writer Jean Shepherd, it's a wonderfully humorous film depicting the late 30's.
  5. "Miracle on 34th Street" Santa Claus played by Edmund Gwenn, goes on trial to prove whether or not he truly exists or is another New York City lunatic. Maureen O'Sullivan and Natalie Wood play the mother and daughter who learn faith is believing when common-sense tells you not to.
  6. "Babes in Toyland" Starring Laurel and Hardy as bumbling toy makers in Mother Goose Land, making this a timeless Christmas favorite. The comedic duo match wiles against villain Barnaby to save Little Bo Peep. The funniest and most touching moments, however, are with show-stealers, the Three Little Pigs.
  7. "A Christmas Carol" Watch  the one with Alistair Sims which ranks the best of all versions. Ebenezer Scrooge played by Sims, is an embittered man who hates Christmas. He is turned around by the three ghosts who show him the error of his ways before it's too late.
  8. "This Christmas" The African-American cast stars Loretta Devine, and Chris Brown in his film debut, as the youngest of five adult children who secretly harbors a desire to sing. It's a Christmas reunion with the other four, packed with betrayal, infidelity, crime, and sibling rivalry. Devine plays the matriarch, who divorced her wandering musician husband and refuses to accept desires of professional musicianship in her oldest and youngest sons.
  9. "The Lemon Drop Kid" The movie featuring Bob Hope playing as a con man with a heart of gold. A furious gangster loses 10,000, thanks to Hope's miscalculations on a horse race. Hope dons a Santa Suit in a new swindle to raise the money. The great classic song "Silver Bells" is featured in this comedy Christmas favorite, and belongs on the best top 10 holiday movies.
  10. "The Family Stone" Also starring Claire Danes, Sarah Jessica Parker, Delmot Mulrooney and Luke Wilson, the movie is a story of mix-matched romances amid tense family dynamics. Great drama amid comedic moments make it a new favorite.
