This list of the 10 best historical movies were super hard to pick. History is the basis for many of the best movies ever made. Everyone will likely have their own opinion of what the best historical movies are, but to help narrow the choices there is a list below of the best historical movies.

  1. “Gone With the Wind.” One of the best historical movies ever is “Gone With the Wind.” It is the story of a spoiled girl from the south who loves a married man. This movie simply has to be watched, for any explanation will fall short in telling how good it is.
  2. “Pearl Harbor.” “Pearl Harbor” is a good historical war movie, especially for those who like a romance story woven into their historical movie. Starring Ben Affeck, Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale “Pearl Harbor” tells the tale of one woman who loves two men in the midst of the attack in Hawaii.
  3. “Schindler’s List.” “Schindler’s List” was released in 1993 and stars Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler. In this war movie, Schindler owns a factory and staffs his factory with Jews that had been brought in by the Nazis. After a while, Schindler asks that they keep staffing his plant with the Jews because he realized that his own factory was saving the lives of people who would have otherwise been sent to a death camp.
  4. “Enemy at the Gates.” “Enemy at the Gates” is movie based on historical events. This movie is about the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad. One German sniper and one marksman from the Urals are at odds throughout the entire movie. That is, until they inevitably have to meet.
  5.  “Braveheart.” “Braveheart” is a historical movie starring Mel Gibson. This movie is about the troubles between the Scottish and the English, troubles so bad they eventually turn into a full out war. Mel Gibson stars as William Wallace, a man who kills a whole English platoon by himself.
  6. Titanic.” Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, "Titanic" is a great retelling of the sinking of the ship, Titanic, with a fictional twist. “Titanic” is one of the good historical romance movies which is fast paced with a lot of action.
  7. “Glory Road” “Glory Road” is a historical movie starring Josh Lucas, Tatyana Ali, Wilbur T. Fitzgerald (II), Afemo Omilami, and Michael Arata. Set in 1966, basketball coach Don Haskins takes on a coaching job for the Texas Western Miners. In a time of segregation, the schools and society fought against him as he started the first game of the season with an all African-American lineup. Haskins, his family and his team rise against the hurt and violence of the community around them, making a historic step which helped pave the way to the future of basketball.
  8. “The Man in the Iron Mask.” A great historical movie is “The Man in the Iron Mask.” This movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as King Louis XIV of France. The Musketeers have grown old and the King is not a good King, he is young and starving his people. So, the Musketeers come up with a plan to switch the King with his imprisoned twin brother.
  9. “The Ten Commandments.” One of the best and most popular historical movies ever is “The Ten Commandments.” Released in 1956 and starring Charlton Heston, this movie is retells the biblical history of the life of Moses.
  10. “Tombstone.”“Tombstone” is a great historical movie about what led up to the shoot out at the OK corral. This movie stars Kurt Russell, Sam Elliot, Val Kilmer, and Bill Paxton. The Ear Brothers have made their way to Dodge City, AZ and have no interest in becoming part of the law. That is, until the cowboys harassment of the townspeople goes too far.
