The best hippie movies ever made either appeal to the hippie generation, take place during the heydays of the hippie movement or have an incredible hippie character within their story. These films are of all genres as well, showing that the hippie character is one that has a place in all parts of storytelling. Well, that and a lot of characters (and people who make movies) smoke weed.

  1. "The Big Lebowski" One of the Coen Brothers' masterpieces may be the best hippie movie, as its main character "The Dude" is a washed-up hippie who dons himself a private detective. This film is about a lot of things. But then again, aren't hippies... man?

  2. "Children of Men" An excellent science-fiction film about our near future in which women are unable to have babies, this film qualifies as one of the best hippie movies because of Michael Caine's fantastic performance as a weed-smoking hippie who helps our main characters escape with the only pregnant woman in the world.

  3. "Into The Wild" This drama based on the true story of a rich kid who goes out into the wilderness to live off the land (and ultimately poisons himself by accident) follows one of the many hippie philosophies. It's a spiritual hippie movie beyond anything else.

  4. "Dazed and Confused" A stoner comedy about the high school days in the '70s and '80s will put this movie on the list for any hippie. It will probably also remind all of them of the little snippets of their high school days.

  5. "Pineapple Express" Another stoner comedy about two stoners who go on the run from corrupt cops and the mob. Something about paranoia and weed smoking go hand in hand don't they?

  6. "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" A zany, ridiculous ride with two characters (one of whom is the silent director of the film, Kevin Smith) this outrageous movie qualifies as one of the best hippie movies, mostly because it's only really watchable when your stoned. And then it's really funny.

  7. "Half-Baked" Yet another stoner comedy, but a funny one at that, with Dave Chappelle and a number of other hilarious comedians from the tail-end of the '90s. Hippies clearly love stoner comedies.

  8. "Woodstock" A documentary about the epic music festival that defined a generation and truly brought the hippie movement into focus. Or out of focus. Still, one of the best documentaries ever made about the generation and the music which influenced them.

  9. "The Last Waltz" Another incredible music documentary by legendary director Martin Scorsese, this movie should be on every hippie's list. It sums up the music towards the end of the hippie movement.

  10. "Forest Gump" This epic film covers the coming of age of America through the 20th century, spending a good percentage of it in the '60s and '70s during the hippie movement. Definitely one of the best hippie movies ever made, if not one of the best movies ever made, in general.
