10 Best DVD Releases May 2009

The 10 best DVD releases of May 2009 is comprised of nine movies, and one HBO vampire drama. Horror, drama, and thrillers monopolize the genres of the  best DVD releases of May 2009. Seven of the 10 releases from May 2009 were ranked in the top 100 selling DVDs of 2009.

  1. "Taken" - This action-drama stars Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills, an ex-government operative who has less than four days to find his kidnapped daughter. Released on May 12, 2009 "Taken" is a suspense thriller that keeps you engaged and in suspense. One of the 10 best DVD releases from May 2009 because it sold 1.9 million copies its first week.
  2. "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" – Kevin James stars as a single dad working as a mall security officer. A heist shuts down the mall, and Paul Blart gets to take charge and save the day. One of the best May 2009 DVD releases because it is a wholesome family comedy that keeps you laughing.
  3. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" – Released May 5, 2009 this fantasy drama was adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards. It's a heartfelt love story with a unique twist. Starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, the DVD sold 1.2 million copies during its first week of release.
  4. "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" - This horror/action/fantasy movie is about the origins of the feud between the aristocratic vampires, known as Death Dealers, and the barbaric Lycans (werewolves). A great horror movie that tells the back story for the popular "Underworld" movies that came before it. The DVD was released in May 2009 and sold 1.2 million copies the first week.
  5. "True Blood: The Complete First Season" – Released on May 19, 2009, this popular HBO vampire drama sold 1.78 million copies in 2009. "True Blood" is a great unique HBO show that tells the tale of a human girl who falls for a vampire. One of the 10 best DVD releases of May 2009 because of how many twists and turns the shows plot has, which keeps the audience in suspense.
  6. "Valkyrie" – Released on May 19, 2009, "Valkyrie" is about German generals who hatch a scheme to assassinate Adolph Hitler at the height of WWII. The drama stars Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Eddie Izzard. One of the 10 best DVD releases of May 2009 because it sold 1.59 million that year, and ranked #57 on the top selling DVDs of 2009 list.
  7. "My Bloody Valentine 3-D". This 2009 remake of the horror/slasher  film of the same name had a successful May 2009 DVD release. It is about a deranged killer that murders those who celebrate Valentine's Day. A great horror movie that keeps you guessing and in suspense until the end. The movie grossed $20.9 million in DVD sales.
  8. "New in Town" - This 2009 comedy stars Renée Zellweger as Lucy Hill, an up and coming executive living in Miami who meets the man of her dreams (Harry Connick, Jr.). The movie is a cute love story about if work or love is more important. The May 2009 DVD made $16 million in DVD sales.
  9. "The Grudge 3" - One of the top DVD releases of May 2009 because this movie was a direct-to-DVD sequal of the popular horror films "The Grudge" and "The Grudge 2."  The movie follows Naoko, the sister of Kayako as she tries to stop the curse once and for all. This horror movie was such a DVD success that there will be a "The Grudge 4".
  10. "Delhi 6" - The DVD for "Delhi 6" was released on May 5, 2009 and is one of the best releases from that month. The story follows Roshan as he travels from the United States to India with his ailing grandmother. The India based film was written directed by National Film Awards winner Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.
