10 Best DVD Releases January 2009

The 10 best DVD releases in January 2009 are all movies that grossed over $5 million in DVD sales. Over 40 DVDs were released in January 2009, and the  best releases are comprised of top grossing, and critically acclaimed movies. Sequels, dramas, horror and comedy films all make the list of best January 2009 DVD releases.

  1. "Pineapple Express". This film stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as stoners who go on the run after witnessing a murder by a crooked cop and a dangerous drug lord. The comedy was released onto DVD in January 2009 and sold 2.6 million copies. One of the best DVD releases because it is a great laught out loud, no thinker type of comedy.
  2. "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". This film is about Vicky and Christina (Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall), two Americans, who become involved with an artist (Javier Bardem) and his nutty ex-wife (Penelope Cruz). It is a heartfelt comedy that has brilliant award winning actors. It's one of the best DVD releases of January 2009 because the film appeared on ten of the top critics' top ten lists of the best films of 2008.
  3. "Saw V". The fifth installment in the "Saw" movie franchise, "Saw V" was released onto DVD in January 2009. The horror movie follows Hoffman carrying on Jigsaws legacy. One of the best January 2009 releases because even though it is the fifth "Saw" movie, it was still popular and grossed a lot of money in the theater and DVD sales.
  4. "Max Payne". The movie stars Mark Wahlberg at Max Payne, a cop who wants revenge against those responsible for the murder of his family and partner. One of the 10 best DVD releases of January 2009 because it is a great crime drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The DVD sold 1.3 million copies in 2009.
  5. "Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys". The DVD for this comedy was released in January 2009 and is about how an upper-crust, and working class family gets their lives linked by a scandal. It revolves around the dynamics of an African American family, and a Caucasian family, something not touched on too often in a comedy.
  6. "Fireproof". The low budget drama "Fireproof" is one of the best DVD releases of January 2009. The movie revolves around Caleb, a firefighter whose relationship with his wife is strained. She wants a divorce because he doesn't pay attention to her wants or needs. The story has a great message about how it is never to late to change your ways, as Caleb changes his to win his wife over again.
  7. "Open Season 2". The direct-to-DVD sequel to the animated film "Open Season" was produced by Sony Pictures Animation, and stars the voices of Joel McHale, Mike Epps, and Jane Krakowski. It is a great family movie that can be watched by all ages. Released in January 2009, the animated family comedy went on to earn $26.4 million in DVD sales.
  8. "Lakeview Terrace". The DVD was released on January 27, 2009 and went on to sell 1.25 million copies during 2009. The suspense thriller is about a young couple getting harassed by their next-door neighbor (Samuel L. Jackson), who disapproves of their interracial relationship. Things turn tragic when the couple decides to fight back.
  9. "The Rocker". The comedy stars Rainn Wilson as a failed drummer who gets a second chance at fame twenty years after being booted out of his band. Christina Applegate, Emma Stone and Jane Lynch also star in "The Rocker." The DVD was released in January 2009, and went on to gross $8.1 in sales.
  10. "Righteous Kill". The action/drama stars Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as veteran New York City police detectives chasing a serial killer. A great movie because it stars two of the most famous and respected actors. The January 2009 DVD went on to gross $16.2 million in sales that year.
