In the catalogue of the 10 best Australian actors, there are some who were actually born in Australia and some who moved there early in life to be raised. For the few here for which that is the case, they are just too good to leave off the list. If these Australian actors are known to be greats in the movie business, they are on the roll.

  1. Nicole Kidman When it comes to the best Australian actors, Nicole Kidman is on everybody's list. Her fans love to argue about what her best movie is. Fortunately, she has been in so many good movies that everybody is bound to have a favorite. You may remember "Australia" (very appropriate), "Cold Mountain" and "The Stepford Wives." It's not her looks that makes her so good—though they don't hurt—but her versatility. She can be dead serious in one move and play a comedic role in the next.

  2. Rod Taylor Rod Taylor has been making movies as far as most people can remember. He was a big success in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," in which he displayed his dramatic side. In late 2000 he appeared in the popular comedy, "Inglourious Basterds."

  3. Heath Ledger Ledger remains an absolute favorite with movie lovers worldwide. Before his death, this Australian actor crafted famous roles in beloved movies such as "The Dark Knight" and "Brokeback Mountain." Ledger is in the class of believable actors.

  4. Guy Pearce Also making the list of ten best Australian actors is Guy Pearce. Pearce had a big hit with his role in "Memento" and more recently appeared in "The Hurt Locker." He can easily pull of the role of a drag queen ("The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert") then do a very dramatic role, like his holier-than-thou character in "L.A. Confidential."

  5. Cate Blanchett There is a big catalogue of great movies that showcase Cate Blanchett. She has a knack for picking winners, such as "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "I'm Not There" and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age." Her funny side can be seen in "Pushing Tin."

  6. Errol Flynn Australian acting legend Earl Flynn was quite the sex symbol in his day and quite the legend today. His good looks drew a lot of women to see him on the big screen. He was versatile enough to play in a Western once ("Santa Fe Trail") and then a romantic comedy ("Never Say Goodbye") the next.

  7. Russell Crowe Where do we start with this top ten best Australian actor? It seems he comes with one fabulously crafted role after another. There is no denying that Crowe is truly an artist. His characters are always so likable, so believable and so dramatic.

  8. Hugh Jackman Okay, ladies. Just calm down. And guys, take this advice: If you are the jealous type, do not watch a Hugh Jackman movie with your girlfriend. She will not be able to restrain herself and you will end up frustrated. Jackman made a good co-star to Nicole Kidman in "Australia" by displaying an off-centered wit. But to even that out, he played a very serious, if not frightening, role in the X-Men series.

  9. Mel Gibson Like so many Australian actors, Mel Gibson has been in a lot of great movies. Not many would dispute, though, that "Braveheart" is his finest for the drama and adventure. But, those who like their movies a little on the twisted side might remember "Mad Max." His comedic side came out well in the "Lethal Weapon" series.

  10. Sam Worthington Sam Worthington may be best known for his roles in "Terminator Salvation" and the very successful "Avatar." He is versatile enough to have had roles in dramas, comedies, science fiction and action.
