The 10 best 1980’s movies are a really wonderful collection of films. The eighties were a great time for a particular style of cinema that was often glitzy and elegant while simultaneously maintaining a certain level of realism. Sometimes the movies were a bit excessive, but some of the best 1980’s movies manage to carry that off in a way that makes it a positive rather than a negative.

  1. “Blue Velvet” – This is one of the best 1980’s movies about crime and passion. This movie is very disturbing but constantly intriguing, and made with an excellent eye for cinematic art.
  2. “The Shining” – Stanley Kubrick’s classic is easily the best horror film of the 1980’s and one of the best films of all time. It manages to be frightening and thought-provoking at the same time, which is a rare combination.
  3. “Platoon” – This film offers more realism than most other films on this list of the best 1980’s movies. It’s probably the best movie of all time dealing with the war in Vietnam.
  4. “Scarface” – This is one of the best 1980’s movies if you’re looking for over-the-top action and great acting. This gangster film about the cocaine trade does a good job representing its time period, and it never fails to entertain.
  5. “Once Upon a Time in America” – Very few crime movies reach this level of brilliance. This is a true epic in every sense of the word. It tells the story of a group of young friends as they slowly grow up and involve themselves in various illegal activities.
  6. “The Breakfast Club” – No movie does a better job representing the youth culture of the early 1980’s. This movie tells the story of a group of teens spending a day in detention.
  7. “The Princess Bride” – This film is one of the best 1980’s movies if you’re looking for fun and romance. It’s a fantasy film about a hero who goes to save a princess from an undesired marriage.
  8. “Ran” – Very few historical war movies measure up to the brilliance of “Ran.” It may not be director Akira Kurosawa’s best flick, but it’s still among the best 1980’s movies.
  9. “When Harry Met Sally” – This is one of the two or three best romantic comedies of all time and easily among the best 1980’s movies. It tells the story of old friends who very slowly transform their relationship until it becomes more intimate.
  10. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” – This is one of the best 1980’s movies if you’re looking for high adventure. It launched an iconic character and created a huge franchise.
