Movie Cowboys That Rock

Wednesday, August 10 by Louis Yang

Cowboys have always been an inspiration for boys and this list honors those movie cowboys that rock. From John Wayne to Clint Eastwood, these cowboys are the ones that don't take crap from anybody. So without further adieu, here are the best movie cowboys.

  1. Gary Cooper in ''High Noon'' This is a classic revenge story set in the early years of the United States. Cooper plays a sheriff who has to face a group of murderous thugs by himself. "High Noon" contains the classic showdown scene that has been parodied and paid homage to many times.
  2. John Wayne in ''The Searchers'' John Wayne portrays Ethan Edwards in this classic film. Edwards begins a long feud with the Indians until his worst nightmare comes true.
  3. Jack Crabb from ''Little Big Man'' Although he's half Indian and cowboy, Crabb is 100 percent awesome. Torn between western and Native American culture, we follow through his struggles to fit in.
  4. Yul Brynner in ''The Magnificent Seven'' A remake of the original Japanese ''Seven Samurai,'' this film lives up to the name by having some of the best movie cowboys to date and Brynner plays one of them. How could a line for line remake of one of the greatest films of all time not be spectacular?
  5. Blondie from ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'' This was the performance that shot Clint Eastwood into superstardom. His portrayal of the cold-blooded killer will be entertaining every time you watch it. This cemented Eastwood as one of the greatest western actors since John Wayne.
  6. Charles Bronson in ''Once Upon a Time in the West'' This was one of the most realistic representations of the lawless West for its time. Bronson's performance is brilliant as usual, freezing the blood in his audience's veins.
  7. William Munny from ''Unforgiven'' Clint Eastwood plays a former heartless killer who may have lost his touch. He struggles to catch an outlaw in the badlands of the West, but with his children involved, the stakes are ever higher. It's a classic, gritty Eastwood cowboy performance.
  8. Paul Newman in ''Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'' Newman plays Cassidy, a typical anti-hero whom the audience constantly roots for. A true western classic that shouldn't be missed. Newman's talent shines with this role.
  9. Anton Chigurh from ''No Country For Old Men'' Played by Javier Bardem, Chigurh is a cold blooded force of murder that has no remorse in killing anything. The movie is worth watching if only for Bardem's performance.
  10. Russell Crowe in ''3:10 to Yuma'' Crow pays Ben Wade, a captured outlaw who must be escorted to his execution at dawn. Co-starring Christian Bale, this movie is a fresh take on westerns after a long hiatus. Besides, it's Russell Crowe playing a stone cold killer. What could go wrong?
