The 10 best western movie actors were either Wild West outlaws, gunfighters, town marshals, bounty hunters or farmers. Whatever their title is, western movie actors were always the heroes in the movie. Western movie actors always have a charm about them. Besides being the hero of the western movie, the best western movie actors ride horses, chase bad guys, skillfully hunt and kill if needed.

  1. John Wayne- John Wayne is without a doubt the best western movie actor. John was born in 1907 and died in 1979. He died of stomach cancer. He began his film career in 1930 with a role in “The Big Trail.” He played a singing cowboy in “Riders of Destiny.” One of his most popular roles was in “The High and The Mighty” in 1954.
  2. Clint Eastwood- Clint Eastwood was born in 1930. Eastwood was famous for his role as Rowdy Yates in the movie “Rawhide.” That role was Eastwood’ break in the movie industry. His other big roles were in the movie “A Fistful of Dollars” in 1963.
  3. James Stewart- James Stewart is one of the best western movie actors. Stewart was born in 1908 and died form a lung blood clot in 1997. His first film was “The Murder Man” in 1935. His first western film was “Destry Rides Again” in 1939. In the movie he plays the role of a pacifist lawman. Besides westerns, Stewart also did roles in suspense thrillers and biographies.
  4. Robert Redford- Robert Redford was born in 1936.  He is an actor, film director, producer, businessman, environmentalist and philanthropist. His most popular films include “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid” and “Jeremiah Johnson.” His first film came in 1962 in “War Hunt.”
  5. Roy Rogers- Roy Rogers is one of the best western movie actors. Rogers was actually born Leonard Franklin Slye in 1911. He died in 1998 at the age of 86 from congestive heart failure. His first movie was “Slightly Static” in 1935. He played the role of a singing cowboy in most of his western movies. His wife, Dale Evans as well as well as his two dogs appeared in many movies with him.
  6. Robert Duvall- Robert Duvall was born in 1931. He has appeared in several western movies such as “True Grit,” “Open Range” and “Geronimo: An American Legend.” His movie debut was in 1962 in the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird.” In the movie “True Grit,” he played alongside John Wayne in the role of the notorious male factor Ned Pepper.
  7. Paul Newman Paul Leonard Newman was born in 1925 and died at the age of 83 in 2008 of lung cancer. His first movie role was in the film “The Silver Chalice” in 1954. His most popular western movies are “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid,” “Hombre” and “The Left Handed Gun.”
  8. Charlton Heston- Charlton Heston was born in 1923 and died in 2008. He died at the age of 84 from prostate cancer. His western movie roles include “Big Country,” “Will Penny” and “Arrowhead.” His first movie was in “Dark City” in 1950.
  9. Kirk Douglas- Kirk Douglas is one of the best western movie actors. His most popular western movies include “War Wagon,” “Last Train from Gun Hill” and “Lonely Are the Brave.” He was born Issur Danielovitch in 1916. He is 94 years old. Douglas has starred with leading ladies such as Lana Turner, Doris Day and Barbara Stanwyck.
  10. Alan Ladd- Ladd was born in 1913. He died at the age of 50 in 1964. Claims are that he overdosed on alcohol and three other drugs. He starred in “Shane” in 1953, “The Proud Rebel” in 1958 and “The Iron Mistress” in 1952. He played the title role in “Shane.”
