The war movies of 2009 ranged from touching tales that pulled at your heartstrings to missions of horror in the Middle East. It doesn't matter if the war story is based on true events or fiction, these movies are always popular with both male and female movie-goers.

  1. "Red Sands" (2009) This war movie featured horror, action and drama. Present-day U.S. soldiers are currently stationed in Afghanistan and out of boredom, destroy a local statue. Unbeknownst to them, something evil is released from this statue after its destruction. The soldiers soon find out this supernatural being will fight them all to the death, not because it's upset about being freed, but because it's demonic and hates humans. "Red Sands" stars Shane West, Aldis Hodge and Leonard Roberts.

  2. "The Messenger" (2009) This 2009 war drama stars Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster and Samantha Morton. A deployed soldier named Will is injured in Iraq and is thus sent home to recover. He gets back with his long time girlfriend once he's stateside who, unfortunately, is already engaged to a man Will knows. Once Will recovers, he's assigned to the notification team covering his area. He ends up having to deliver devastating news to a young woman and eventually starts a relationship with this widow of a fallen soldier.

  3. "brothers" (2009) This war movie tells the story of two brothers and how one goes missing while on tour in the Middle East. Tobey Maguire portrays Marine Captain Sam Cahill who gives his brother a place to live despite his checkered past. Sam is called to duty in Afghanistan and goes missing. Fearing he may be dead, Sam's brother, Tommy, (Jake Gyllenhaal) comforts Sam's wife (Natalie Portman) and family. To their surprise, Sam is found alive and brought home. The torture he endured at the hands of the enemy has made him paranoid and delusional. His war demons may be the undoing of his entire family.

  4. "Everyman's War" (2009) A true war story released in 2009, "Everyman's War" features real-life experiences of the 94th Infantry during the Battle of the Bulge. Sergeant Don Smith and his infantry unit must fight the German Panzer division despite insurmountable odds. None of Don's commanders believed this "Ghost" division would ever attack during blizzard conditions, but they were dead wrong. Smith is left to decide how to get his unit out alive, in addition to warning the nearby town of the Nazi's impending attack. This 2009 war movie stars Michael J. Prosser, Cole Carson and Lauren Blair.

  5. "The Hurt Locker" (USA, 2009) Released in the United States in 2009, this Academy Award-winning film stars Jeremy Renner, Brian Geraghty and Anthony Mackie. U.S. soldiers are assigned to work in the bomb disposal team in Iraq. With threats around every corner, the Army unit must deal with the fact they may be killed at any moment by a bomb they are attempting to disarm or the enemy trying to rid their country of American soldiers.
