Medieval War Movies About Love

If you are a fan of history and of romance, then you are definitely going to want to watch these medieval war movies about love.  From the glory and splendor of Camelot to the gritty dirtiness of Scotland in the Middle Ages, there’s something in this film list for anyone who is a fan of movies.

  1. "Braveheart"- This timeless film starring Mel Gibson tells the story of Scottish highlander William Wallace and his determination to save Scotland from the grips of King Edward Longshanks.  Along the way, he falls in love with a beautiful woman, only to have his lov taken away by cruel English soldiers.  With its blend of medieval war and love, this is one film that is a delight.
  2. "Camelot"- This splendid medieval film, which tells the story of King Arthur in the decline of his kingdom, manages to blend the terrible facts of war with the timeless love triangle of Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere.  With a cast comprised of some of the greats of the time, including Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave, this is one film about the medieval period that everyone will enjoy.
  3. "The Princess Bride"- This film tells the charming love story of Princess Buttercup and Westley, along with a great deal of battle scenes to go along with it.  Although more lighthearted than some other medieval movies, it is nevertheless a great pleasure to watch and is a great way to spend the afternoon.
  4. "The Lion in Winter"- This classic medieval war film, which stars the inimitable Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn, tells the story of the declining love between the two powerful monarchs, as well as the political scheming and maneuvering of their children.  With its great dialogue, not to mention the formidable acting talent of the main actors, you are definitely going to enjoy this movie about the medieval period.
  5. "Tristan+Isolde"- This film, which tells the timeless medieval love story of Tristan and Isolde, is a genuinely stirring love film that is sure to move even the most unemotional person.  Starring James Franco and a host of others, it is a journey back in time and an engagement with one of the most famous love stories coming out of the medieval period.
  6. "King Arthur"- This rendition of the Arthurian story, which attempts to be truer to story, is set against the backdrop of the downfall of Rome and the Saxon invasion of England.  Amongst this political turmoil, Arthur, a Roman commander, must navigate his own waters, with both his love for Guinevere and his affection for his friend Lancelot.  With its mixture of action, war, and romance, this is one medieval war film that is not to be missed.
  7. "The Adventures of Robin Hood"- This swashbuckling war film, which stars Errol Flynn and Olivia Havilland (from the Golden Age of Hollywood) tells the timeless tale on Robin Hood and Marian, set against the backdrop of the cruel reign of Prince John.  Although some might think it a big corny, it is still eminently worth watching.
  8. "Excalibur"- This dark and slightly bizarre film, which is a fanciful retelling of the tale of King Arthur, features some of the best love scenes but also some of the most disturbing war scenes, of any film about the famous king and his knights.  In addition, it stars a very young Helen Mirren, in her role as Arthur’s hateful half-sister Morgana, and is definitely worth watching for any who like to see their medieval love and war combined in some very unusual ways.
