Grab a helmet and tub of popcorn as you browse through this list of good war movies for guys. Directors like Steven Spielberg attempt to portray the true tragedies of war. Meanwhile, directors like Grant Heslov take a more lighthearted view of the grimmest of subjects.

  1. “Saving Private Ryan.” Steven Spielberg directed this 1998 film about soldiers on a mission to retrieve a paratrooper, the  last remaining son of a heartbroken mother. The movie, which starred well-known actors such as Tom Hanks, Vin Diesel and Matt Damon, won five Oscars in 1999. It’s a good war movie for guys interested in World War II.

  2. “Black Hawk Down.” This 2001 film follows the struggles of numerous soldiers during the Battle of Mogadishu, during which the Somali National Alliance clashed with U.S. troops. Actors such as Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Orlando Bloom head the extensive cast. A book by Mark Bowden inspired the plot of this good war movie for guys.

  3. “Three Kings.” Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney, Ice Cube and Spike Jonze starred in this 1999 film about a group of soldiers attempting a gold heist during the Gulf War. This is a good war movie for guys who enjoy a combination of action and comedy. It’s also notable that director David Russell employed a number of experimental camera techniques during the filming process, giving the finished product an interesting cinematographic style.

  4. “Th Men Who Stare at Goats.” This is a good war film for guys looking for an absurd story. A journalist named Bob Wilton spends most of the plot trying to uncover the mysteries of U.S. soldiers who claim to possess psychic powers. Lyn Skip Cassady, played by George Clooney, clues the journalist in with many bizarre tales of paranormal military operations. Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges starred alongside Clooney.
