The ten greatest war movies ever made portray some of society's deadliest battles – from World War II the American Revolutionary War, the Iraq War, to even the Civil War. These horrific conflicts have led to some of the finest cinematic masterpieces ever to grace the big screen, from Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" to Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker." Get ready for the ten greatest war movies.

  1. "Saving Private Ryan." This Steven Spielberg-directed World War II masterpiece is one of the greatest war movies and sports an all-star cast led by Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. Depicting America's venture into Nazi-occupied Europe, it follows a platoon in search of one man.
  2. "The Hurt Locker." Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, this is among one of the greatest war movies ever made. It's an empowering U.S. Army experience that follows the lives of two members of the U.S. Military's Explosives Ordinance Disposal Team, as they deal with harrowing bomb situations.
  3. "Black Hawk Down." From director Ridley Scott comes one of the greatest war movies ever made, starring Eric Bana and Josh Hartnett. "Black Hawk Down" is centered around a group of United States soldiers who must fight for survival after their choppers are shot down in the 1993 U.S. raid in Somalia.
  4. "Glory." This fantastic war movie revolves around the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, one of the first U.S. Army units made up of entirely African Americans. "Glory" was led by an all-star cast ranging from Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, to Denzel Washington.
  5. "We Were Soldiers." Directed by Randall Wallace and starring Mel Gibson, Madeline Stowe, Greg Kinnear, Chris Klein and many more well-known actors, "We Were Soldiers" portrays Mel Gibson as Lieutenant Colonel leading a platoon of troops during the Vietnam war.
  6. "The Patriot." Yet another one of the greatest war movies starring Mel Gibson, alongside Heath Ledger and directed by Roland Emmerich, "The Patriot" takes place during the American Revolutionary War and the story follows an American who's forced to join the ranks and lead the battle.
  7. "Platoon." With an all-star cast includingTom Berenger, Charlie Sheen and Willem Dafoe, the Oliver Stone-directed "Platoon" follows a young American (Charlie Sheen) who drops out of college to join the American ranks of the Vietnam war and finds more than what he bargains for.
  8. "Full Metal Jacket." Stanley Kubrick directs this war movie classic based on the book "The Short-Timers" by Gustav Hasford. Starring Matthew Modine, and Vincent D'Onofrio, "Full Metal Jacket" tells the tale of a U.S. marine squad, from their training to the battlefield, in one of the greatest war movies ever.
  9. "The Thin Red Line." This American war movie is centered around a completely fictional story that depicts the United States Army in the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II, in which a platoon from C Company are brought in to relieve a battle-torn unit . 
  10. "Inglourious Basterds."  Directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt as the lead, is a fictional tale of two different plots to assassinate the political leadership of Nazi Germany – one involving a team of Jewish Allied troops and the other by a French Jewish proprietor.
