10 Best World War Films

What are the 10 best World War Films? There have been so many great films made about the two World Wars that such a list will naturally leave out many movies that could easily be put in the top ten. This list will hopefully have more than a few which will appeal to most film buffs.

  1. "Alls Quiet on the Western Front" – 1930 WWI – This film was nominated for four Oscars and won two of them. It is the story of a young soldier on the Western front trenches of World War I and his disillusionment. It made the AFI's Top 400 Films of all times list and was one of the finalists chosen as the top 100 films of all time.  
  2. "Patton" – 1970 WWII – The story about a controversial American General. A great cast headlined by George C. Scott. Nominated for ten Oscars and won seven. It was one of the 400 movies nominated for the AFI's top 100 movies of all time. It is a must see for any WWII buff.
  3. "The Longest Day" - 1962 WWII – A stellar cast tells the epic story of D-Day form both the Allied and German sides. It was nominated for five Oscars, winning two. It was also one of the top 400 movies on the AFI top 100 vote.  It is one of those movies that you do not see just one time.
  4. "Bridge on the River Kwai" – 1957 WWII – Intense epic about the building of a bridge by POW's in a Japanese Prison camp. It was nominated for eight Oscars, winning seven. It is also one of the AFI's top 100 movies of all time.
  5. "From Here to Eternity" – 1953 WWII – Strong story of Army relationships in pre-war Hawaii leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Nominated for thirteen Oscars and won eight of them. It was also one of the AFI's 400 nominations for top 100 movies. One of the best beach love scenes ever does not hurt either.
  6. "The Great Escape" – 1963 WWII – Epic cast and story about an epic escape from a German prison of war camp. It was one of the 400 movies nominated for the AFI's top 100 movies of all time.
  7. "The Caine Mutiny" – 1954 WWII – One of Humphrey Bogart's best performances. Intense story about the mutiny aboard a Navy destroyer. Nominated for seven Oscars it was one of the AFI's top 400 movies nominated for the Top 100 list.
  8. "African Queen" – 1951 WWI – Epic love story set in WWI. Exquisite performances by Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Nominated for four Oscars winning one. It was one of the AFI's 400 nominations for top 100 movies.
  9. "Best Years of Our Lives" – 1946 – WWII – Intense drama about the changes in the civilian lives of three returning veterans. Won seven Oscars and was one of the top 400 films nominated for the AFI vote of top 100.
  10. "Sands of Iwo Jima" – 1949 WWII – No one is more associated with war movies than John Wayne and this is one of his best. It is the story about a hard bitten Marine which was nominated for four Oscars. A must see for any war movie buff.

These are the top ten World War movies, or at least ten great movies about the World Wars. Every single one is a classic and deserving of being on such a list. Hopefully there is something on this list of the best World War movies you will enjoy.
