10 Best War Movies On DVD

The 10 best war movies on DVD were difficult to choose from. There are just so many good war movies, it makes choosing only ten a hard decision. Below is a compiled list, in no particular order, of the ten best war movies that made the cut.

  1. “Gone With the Wind.” A classic good romance movie “Gone With the Wind is the story of a spoiled girl from the south who loves a married man. This movie simply has to be watched, for any explanation will fall short in telling how good it is.
  2. “Pearl Harbor.” “Pearl Harbor” is a good war movie on DVD, especially for those who like a romance story woven into their war movie. Starring Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale “Pearl Harbor” tells the tale of one woman who loves two men in the midst of the attack in Hawaii.
  3. “We Were Soldiers.” “We Were Soldiers” stars Mel Gibson in this 2002 war movie. In this movie Lt. Col, Hal Moore, is in charge of a unit of Cavalry soldiers who just so happen to be the same regiment as Custer led years ago. This Vietnam War movie is one of the best war movies out there.
  4. “Saving Private Ryan.”  Tom Hanks and Matt Damon star in “Saving Private Ryan,” a war movie about D Day, World War II. This powerful re creating of the horrible time begins with the D Day invasion and tells of its aftermath.
  5. “Platoon.” “Platoon” is another Vietnam War movie. It was released in 1986 and stars Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, Forest Whitaker, and Francesco Quinn. This movie gives a look at what young men from different walks of life, go through in combat. This is one of the best war movies on DVD.
  6. “Full Metal Jacket.” “Full Metal Jacket” is a Marine war movie that takes place in two parts, the first part is about boot camp and how soldiers survived, or didn’t, under the pressure of their verbally and physically abusive drill sergeant. Part two tells the tale of those who went on to fight in Vietnam.
  7. “Schindler’s List.”“Schindler’s List” was released in 1993 and stars Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler. In this war movie, Schindler owns a factory and staffs his factory with Jews that had been brought in by the Nazis. After a while, Schindler asks that they keep staffing his plant with the Jews because he realized that his own factory was saving the lives of people who would have otherwise been sent to a death camp.
  8. “Black Hawk Down.”“Black Hawk Down” is a war movie released in 2001. This movie is based on real life military history. Two helicopters go down and the military brings back every soldier, dead or alive. Because of this policy they end up staying in enemy territory too long and are quickly surrounded and attacked.
  9. “Enemy at the Gates.”“Enemy at the Gates” is also a war movie based on historical events. This movie is about the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad. One German sniper and one marksman from the Urals, are at odds throughout the entire movie. That is, until they inevitably have to meet.
  10.  “Braveheart.” “Braveheart” is a war movie starring Mel Gibson. This movie is about the troubles between the Scottish and the English, troubles so bad they eventually turn into a full out war. Mel Gibson stars as William Wallace, a man who kills a whole English platoon by himself.
