The Matrix Quotes
People saw this movie over and over again because of the sheer brilliance of "The Matrix" quotes. Penned by the then Wachowski brothers, Andy and Larry (now Lana), these quotes made people think, and think hard. They become a part on the American lexicon. The movie's two main characters were Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). Here are the best-remembered quotes and who said them.
"Do you believe that my being stronger or faster has anything to do with my muscles in this place? Do you think that's air you're breathing now?" Morpheus, trying to get Neo to understand what happens when they fight. This is when Neo was just barely coming to grips with how a closed mind can adversely affect the end result. The last sentence indicates how we shouldn't assume, even if the assumption seems completely logical.
"What are you waiting for? You're faster than this. Don't think you are, know you are. Come on. Stop trying to hit me and hit me!" Morpheus, continuing to battle Neo's mindset. When he succeeded, and Neo unleashed a veritable one-man war aimed at defeating Morpheus, entire theaters full of people cheered.
"This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes." Morpheus, during his first meeting with Neo. At this point, Neo knew of the existence of the Matrix. Now, he has to decide how much it means to him to find out the rest. If he goes, there will be no turning back. He knows nothing of the truth of where he's headed. This is a huge decision.
"Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself." This is the final quote in an exchange between Neo and a child who may turn out to be 'The One'. The child bends a spoon with the power of his mind, and the exchange ensues.
"Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth." Neo asks what truth, and the child responds "There is no spoon." Neo repeats him, which leads to the quote above. The most likely explanation of this is that we spend far too much time trying to manipulate externals, when all we need to do is change our perceptions.
"I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you." Neo, telling the agents that he's about to blow the Matrix wide open, by telling all of us the truth. This is the quote that ends the movie.
