There are very few impressive science fiction movies of 2008. The year was a dark one for any crowd pleasing, ground breaking, movie releases that were of the science fiction genre. That being said, there are still ten sci-fi movies worth taking a look at.

  1. “Iron Man” Tony Stark is forced to build a powerful suit of armor in order to escape captivity. Seeing the promise in the technology, he decides to create a sleeker, more practical suit which brings upon him the nam Iron Man. This quirky, entertaining, action packed movie deserves to named one of the best science fiction movies of 2008.
  2. “Wall-E” Probably the cutest entry to this list, “Wall-E” is about a waste collecting robot that ends up going on a huge journey. Viewers go head over heels for this cute robot, and his love interest that is introduced later on into the movie. This movie is definitely one of the cutest science fiction movies of 2008.
  3. “The Incredible Hulk” This movie offers a proper rendition of how the Hulk was meant to be shown on the big screen, unlike the original movie released years before it. Bruce Banner transforms into a giant, green, monster when stressed and the military is seeking to turn that power into weapon. This is one of the most visually stunning science fiction movies of 2008.
  4. “The Day The Earth Stood Still” A movie remake of the original 1951 sci-fi film about an alien visitor and its robot. While this movie was not particularly stunning, fans of the original may find themselves pleased at the creation.
  5. “Babylon A.D.” A movie about a mercenary who takes the job of escorting a woman from Russia to America. He runs into trouble when he finds out that a cult is after her with the intentions of harvesting an organism inside of her in order to produce a Messiah. “Babylon A.D.” is one of the better action science fiction movies of 2008.
  6. “Doomsday” “Doomsday” is a futuristic British science fiction movie in which a team of people ar fighting to prevent the spread of a virus that threatens human existence. Certainly not the most original of storylines, but it still remains to be one of the better science fiction movies of 2008.
  7. “Sleep Dealer” An interesting look into a world that is divided by closed borders, but the people remain connected through a digital network. This movie follows the story of Memo Cruz who has hopes of leaving his small village for a big city where he can find better work.  “Sleep Dealer” is one of the more interesting concepts of all the science fiction movies of 2008.
  8. “Repo! The Genetic Opera” A biotech company begins an organ-financing program due to an epidemic of organ failures. The company reserves the right to repossess what they loan to you, which can result in a bloodbath.
  9. “Pontypool” “PontyPool” is a horror film in which a deadly virus infects an Ontario town. Another movie that may not have the most original of storylines, but it does a passable job and giving a fright.
  10. “Journey to the Center of the Earth” This movie is more of a family movie than a science fiction movie, but it still passes for one. It chronicles the search for the main character’s missing brother and ends up with them discovering a fascinating world in the center of the earth.
