Best Movies With Aliens
Extraterrestrials are fun subjects to begin with, and the best movies with aliens are even better. Humans have always wondered if life on Earth is truly alone in the universe. As a result, movies with aliens have become highly popular subject matters. In fact, movies with aliens date back to the very beginnings of film, with the 1902 silent flick "A Trip to the Moon" being one the first.
"Aliens". In 1986, movies with aliens were forever revolutionized. "Aliens" brought the best movies with aliens into a whole new genre of science fiction. It stars Sigourney Weaver and Carrie Henn as two human fighting against some of the ugliest mantises you've ever seen.
"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial". Known to most simply as "E.T.", this film was beyond a success. The film touched our hearts with a gentle alien who befriends a little child named Elliot (Henry Thomas) while attempting to go home. "E.T." stayed at the top on the box office for six consecutive weeks after its release.
"Coneheads". Entering into the third genre and away from the serious drawl of drama/horror flicks, "Coneheads" was 1993 film based on previous SNL sketches of the same name. The movie examined a family of odd aliens (Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin) who take a turn for the good and begin to love planet Earth; this, of course, is after being sent to enslave its people.
"2001: A Space Odyssey". This highly acclaimed space film makes other movies with aliens pale in comparison. The film is an epic tale drawing from many dramatic themes, telling the story of mankind from its humble beginnings to its space aspirations starring Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Today, it is recognized as one of the best movies with aliens (and of all time).
"Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope". The whole "Star Wars" franchise should be on this list of best movies with aliens, but alas we only have so much room. Episode IV was the original "Star Wars" film, bringing to light the story of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). As the plot unfolds, Skywalker joins the noble fight against the evil empire attempting to conquer all of known space. Its perspective of aliens as not merely one huge species with the same traits but rather a diverse and intricate mix revolutionized the space opera genre.
"Superman". This 1978 movie showed aliens not only as benign, but as the savior of our species. Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) is out to defeat Lex Luthor in this famous superhero flick!
"Star Trek: The Motion Picture". As the franchise of "Star Trek" evolved, so did movies with aliens. This first "Star Trek" flick saw the renewal of Captain Kirk (William Shatner) as commander of the USS Enterprise. The crew rejoins to fight V'Ger: a new, seemingly omnipotent alien out for destruction.
"Transformers". In the newest generation of movies with aliens, science fiction can utilize amazing special effects. "Transformers" stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox as two youths in a mechanical battle for humanity.
"Predator". One year after the premiere of its rival's feature-length film, the predator took the stage. In the 1987 film "Predator", Arnold Schwarzenegger takes the role of beefy, retired Army officer out to kick some alien butt.
"Avatar". James Cameron really outdid himself with this one, and we all know "Avatar" to be a great movie showcasing just what special effects can do. "Avatar" revolves around the story of Cpl. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a disabled marine, who gets to explore an amazing world in the body of a foreign being.
From "Avatar" to "Superman", there are a lot of movies with aliens out there. Of course, that being said, only the best become critically acclaimed in time. So enjoy, and be prepared to meet some not-so-distant neighbors!
