Some of the best alien movies of all-time took place during the 1980s and '90s. For some reason the new millennium has not produced many quality alien flicks. However, from the '70s through the '90s there had been several quality movies that featured aliens.

  1. "ET". Topping the list of best alien movies is the Stephen Spielberg classic that featured an alien life form (ET) who was accidentally left behind on earth. Not only was ET one of Drew Barrymore's first films, it also made Reese's Pieces one of the most popular candy choices during that time.

  2. "Alien". This 1979 science fiction/horror film easily makes the best alien movies list. Starring tough chick Sigourney Weaver, "Alien" is a movie about an alien that sprouts through the chest of a poor schmuck from and goes on to kill everyone but Weaver.

  3. "Independence Day". Starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Randy Quaid, and Jeff Goldblum, Independence Day was a 1996 box office hit. Aliens from another planet invade Earth and kill just about everyone on the planet. Not only did Independence Day provide outstanding special effects and constant action, but the acting in this popular alien movie was surprisingly good.

  4. "Starship Troopers". "Starship Troopers" is a 1997 science fiction alien movie about Bugs who attack Earth by launching meteoroids from a distant planet. While the critics did not think much of the film, "Starship Troopers" had a very heavy cult following - partially due to the fact there was a nude shower scene featuring the lovely Dina Meyer.

  5. "Cocoon". "Cocoon" is a 1985 science fiction film directed by Ron Howard. The alien movie revolved around alien life forms from the planet Antarea, who return to pick up their alien friends who remained behind after Atlantis sunk into the ocean. The movie received great reviews as it won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and Don Ameche won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

  6. "Men in Black". Will Smith makes his second appearance on the best alien movie list as he and Tommy Lee Jones star in the 1997 science fiction blockbuster. Smith and Jones monitor alien activity in New York City, while trying to prevent a giant cockroach from destroying the planet. "Men in Black" also features Linda Fiorentino and Rip Torn.
