The list of 5 best fantasy movies 2006 includes several franchise film blockbusters, a foreign language movie and several films with modest budgets. Every year, there seems to be at least one big fantasy movie from a film series that is among the five best fantasy movies, but for a foreign film to make the list is unusual. This unique mix makes 2006 one of the best years for movies in recent memory.

“Pan's Labyrinth”

<p style= This terrific fantasy movie is a Spanish language film produced in Mexico. It stars Ivana Baquero as a young girl who creates a fantasy world to escape her cruel stepfather. In this world, she finds that she can become a princess and be reunited with her real father if she performs three difficult tasks. The fact that this film won three Academy Awards clearly makes it the best fantasy movie of 2006.

“X-Men: The Last Stand”

<p style= This is the third film in the X-Men trilogy and some consider it the least engaging of the three movies. However, this film, staring Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, performed fabulously at the box office, clearly indicating that movie fans considered this film one of the five best fantasy movies in 2006. The plot revolves around the discovery of a cure for mutations, an event that enrages some mutants and causes division in the mutant community.

“The Prestige”

This fantasy movie stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as two magicians in nineteenth century London who engage in a friendly rivalry to determine who the best illusionist is. Soon, the rivalry isn't so friendly. In fact, it leads to murder. Jackman and Bale give outstanding performances and the supporting cast is stellar, too.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest”

<p style= Johnny Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow in this sequel. Sparrow owes a debt to the ghostly Davey Jones and unless he pays off, he'll be sent to a watery grave. This is easily one of the best fantasy movies of 2006 and it's also one of the biggest money makers of all time.

“The Illusionist”

In this fantasy movie, a young boy falls in love with a girl far above his social station. Her family separates the couple and the boy goes on to become a magician. Years later, he crosses paths with the girl and falls in love again. Only, she is engaged to the crown prince and the young magician must use his magic to free her. This fantasy film, starring Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti and Jessica Biel, grossed many times its original budget at both the theater and in DVD rentals.
