10 Dark Fantasy Movies

These dark fantasy movies take fantastical and fairy tale ideas and lead them into very dark places. Some of the movies are animated movies, but are not meant for younger audiences while others take the adult based fairy tales and lead them into the dark woods of the imagination.

  1. “Pan’s Labyrinth”Guillermo del Toro directs this, one of the best dark fantasy movies of all time. Taking place during the Spanish Civil War, this movie is a very dark fairy tale about a little girl who wanders into a magical world where the horrors of the fantastical mirror those from real life.
  2. “Labyrinth” – “Muppet Show” creator Jim Henson directs this, one of the best dark fantasy movies. Jennifer Connelly stars as a girl swept into a magical world ruled by the dangerous Goblin King, played by rock musician David Bowie.
  3. “The Dark Crystal” – This puppet movie is co-directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, remaining one of the best dark fantasy movies ever made. The movie, while starring Muppet styled characters is extremely dark material. Jen, the last of its kind, sets off to save the world from falling into darkness.
  4. “Coraline” – Neil Gaiman’s story is brought to life by animator Henry Selick in this stop motion animation film, one of the best dark fantasy movies of all time. Coraline is a girl who moves into a new home and finds a hidden tunnel that leads to a parallel world with a new set of parents who want her to stay with them.
  5. “Army of Darkness” – The first two “Evil Dead” movies were horror films but in the third film in the sequel, Ash is swept back into the medieval times and it becomes one of the best dark fantasy movies. Ash must fight demons alongside knights and warriors to save this world from destruction.
  6. “Beetlejuice”Michael Keaton plays a demon that is hired by two newly created ghosts to scare new tenants out of their old house. One of the best dark fantasy movies, Tim Burton directs this movie which also stars Alex Baldwin and Winona Ryder.
  7. “The Wizard of Oz” – One of the most beloved children’s stories of all time, this is also one of the best dark fantasy movies ever made. Dorothy ends up in the mystical land of Oz, a land populated by witches, flying monkeys, talking scarecrows and magical warlords.
  8. “Nightmare Before Christmas” – Tim Burton produces this movie, directed by Henry Selick, one of the best dark fantasy movies of all time. Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King and rules over Halloweentown. When he decides to also take over Christmas, the world doesn’t know what is about to hit them.
  9. “Edward Scissorhands” – Tim Burton invented this fantastical fairy tale about an artificial man who has scissors for hands. One of the best dark fantasy movies, this film follows Edward as he in taken in by a suburban household but is soon hunted down like a monster by the city’s residents.
  10. “Audition” – In a very different kind of dark fantasy movie, Takashi Miike directs this movie about a widowed man who sets out to start to date again and finds the worst possible girl. It is unclear from watching the movie how much of what happened is real and how much is in the man’s fantasy.
