10 Best Science Fiction Fantasy Movies

Science fiction fantasy movies are whimsical, interesting, and always a fantastic source of entertainment. Whether it's cowboys in space or an underground village, this list of the ten best science fiction fantasy movies is sure to supply.

  1. "Serenity" (2005) The film sequel to the extremely popular (and tragically canceled) Joss Whedon show "Firefly," "Serenity" is a beautiful film that centers a rag-tag team of what are essentially cowboys in space, and the telepathic and incredibly strong girl River. This mix of science fiction and the whimsy of River's disturbed mind make it by far one of the best science fiction fantasy movies.
  2. "Brazil" (1985) This strange Terry Gilliam film features a man trying to find the woman of his dreams-literally. Its strange darkness and somewhat unsettling imagery may make some recoil, but to others, it just adds to the reasons this strange classic is one of the best science fiction fantasy movies.
  3. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004) "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is one of those movies that seems to stay with everyone who watches it. Its plot, focusing on erasing someone from one's memory, is deeply stirring and emotion, but remains whimsical and tragically sweet the entire time, making it by far one of the ten best science fiction fantasy movies.
  4. "A Clockwork Orange" (1971) This dark, disturbing, and somehow still hilarious film is not for the weak-hearted. The plot revolves around a criminal youth who is subjected to brainwashing to make him "good" in the eyes of society. A Kubrik classic, "A Clockwork Orange" is undeniably one of the best science fiction fantasy movies.
  5. "City of Ember" (2008) If nothing else, "City of Ember" deserves a slot in this list of the ten best science fiction fantasy movies solely for its cinematography. Taking place in an underground city that is lit entirely by light bulbs, "City of Ember" focuses on the city's corruption and two youth's struggle to find a way to keep the city alight.
  6. "Pan's Labyrinth" (2006) This strange, dark (possible) fantasy deals with a young girl's struggles during the Spanish civil war. As her situation grows more intense, she starts finding fantasy all her around her-which may or may not be real. A strange psychological tale with stunning acting, cinematography, writing, and music, "Pan's Labyrinth" is one of the best science fiction fantasy movies.
  7. "The Prestige" (2006) This Christopher Nolan film is often overlooked, especially since "The Dark Knight" and "Inception," but its lack of attention is tragic. The tale of two competing magicians and their heinous attempts to best each other is an intriguing, dark psychological thriller that is definitely one of the ten best science fiction fantasy movies.
  8. "The City of Lost Children" (1995) This movie is incredibly strange and incredibly beautiful. Being astoundingly hard to explain, "The City of Lost Children" has to be seen to be believed, and, if you're lucky, understood. However, strangeness aside, its stylistic innovation and engaging story make it one of the top ten best science fiction fantasy movies out there.
  9. "The Fifth Element" (1997) "The Fifth Element" brings absolutely everything to the table. It is dramatic, hilarious, heartbreaking, interesting, zany, and beautiful all at once. With an amazing cast of Mila Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Bruce Willis, and so many others, this film simply cannot go wrong.
  10. "Sunshine" (2007). One of the lesser-known films in the list, "Sunshine" focuses on a crew of people on a spaceship whose mission it is to re-ignite the sun by crashing into it. The first half is largely about the psychology of the crew, but in Act II it falls into full-out science fiction fantasy, while still keeping the psychological themes, making it one of the best science fiction fantasy movies.
