From Lord of the Rings to Ella Enchanted, here are the ten best romantic fantasy movies. While the fantasy genre may conjure up images of epic battles, it can also be a fantastic setting for romance.

  1. "Enchanted" (2007). While Disney movies may not be considered "fantasy" by hardcore fans, it's hard to dismiss Enchanted-especially with the giant dragon battle at the end. This sweet modern classic is sure to satisfy your cravings for both a good dose of fantasy and romance, and its sweet writing definitely qualifies it as one of the top ten romantic fantasy movies.
  2. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1999). This literal classic has all of the elements a good romantic fantasy movie should have: comedy, romance, whimsy, fantastic acting, and, of course, great writing. Even for people who hate "Romeo and Juliet" and "Julius Caesar", "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is sure to entertain as a romantic fantasy.
  3. "Ella Enchanted" (2004). Another typical princess-like story, Ella Enchanted brings you back to simpler days with sweeter stories. While it may be corny, cheesy, and silly, it's fun the entire way through, which makes it one of the top ten romantic fantasy movies.
  4. "The Lord of the Rings" series. While Lord of the Rings is mostly action and drama, it's undeniable that there are some really beautiful romantic plot points throughout the series. For an action-packed fantasy with some lovely romantic moments, Lord of the Rings is a perfect fix.
  5. "Somewhere In Time" (1980). This 1980 classic about time travel is strange, intriguing, and heartbreakingly romantic. It is an absolute romantic fantasy classic, and definitely one of the top ten.
  6. "Stardust" (2007). This screen adaptation of one of fantasy hero Neil Gaiman's most loved comics and novels, "Stardust" is charming, fantastic, and terribly romantic. Gaiman explores the whimsical idea of a man gradually falling in love with the human form of a star he retrieved for a different woman he loved.
  7. "The Princess Bride" (1987). Who hasn't seen "The Princess Bride", and who doesn't love it? Being one of the sweetest, funniest, and most quotable romantic fantasies, "The Princess Bride" may deserve to be called one of the top ten romantic fantasy movies more than all others.
  8. "Brazil" (1985). It should be said that this movie is not for everyone; its absurdism and dark humor may scare many off, and may make many question that it even is a romance. However, even with all the dark strangeness, the love story between Sam and Jill is, if nothing else, incredibly original, which definitely makes it one of the top ten best romantic fantasy movies.
  9. "Practical Magic" (1998). This film centering around two sister witches, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, is all about falling in love even though it is the last thing you could ever want to do. With its interesting use of magic as well as its darkness, sadness, but beautiful ending and message, Practical Magic is a must for any lover of romantic fantasies.
  10. "How to Train Your Dragon" (2010). While this exciting fantasy may focus more on prejudice than the romance, Aster and Hiccup's romance is so sweet it makes for some of the best scenes in the movie. Who didn't swoon a little in the flying scene? This romantic fantasy is one that is sure to make anyone think giving a girl a ride on a terrifying beast with the capacity to kill is the best idea for a date.
