The 10 best Hindi movies with subtitles are all solid blockbusters. These movies are timeless with their ageless exploration of the human condition. And now, thanks to subtitles, they are easily accessible to an English speaking audience. 

  1. “Gadar Ek Prem Katha.” Sunny Deol is a Sikh who falls in love with Amish Patel in this movie set during the 1947 Partition of British India. This 2001 blockbuster film is the highest grossing Hindi movie ever made in India.
  2. “3 Idiots.” This hugely popular film has one many awards and has become one of highest grossing Hindi movies made in India. The film tells the tale of three students who share a room together in a hostel at an engineering college in Tokyo. 
  3. “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.” This film, with the English translation meaning "sometimes happy and sometimes sad," was the highest grossing Indian movie in the overseas market until 2006. Superstar Shahruhk Khan plays Rahul, who falls in love with Anjali (Kajol), a poor girl, when he returns home from the university.   
  4. “Ghagini.” This 2008 Hindi action thriller with subtitles stars Aamir Khan as Sanjay Singhania, a businessman with a rare medical condition. Sunita (Jiah Khan), a medical student, wants to investigate the case, but her professor denies her Sanjay’s case records because the matter is under criminal investigation. Sunita decides to investigate anyway despite the consequences. 
  5. “Om Shanti Om.” A kaleidoscope of color and movement, this epic 2007 musical parodies the 70s and Bollywood. This movie with subtitles has won numerous awards in many categories and is one of India’s top grossing films. 
  6. “Dhoom 2.”  his Hindi blockbuster stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai as a pair of international thieves who successfully pull off a series of high-profile heists. The movie is in the top ten of the highest grossing movies of all time in India. 
  7. “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.” Starring Shahrukh Khan, the film is a hilarious comedy about an introverted office worker whose love for a spirited woman transforms him into the life of the party.  
  8. “Krissh.” Hrithik Roshan is a superhero who inherits his father’s powers in this Indian trend-setting science fiction film. The blockbuster film with subtitles has won numerous awards, including a National Film Award for Best Special Effects.
  9. “Lage Raho Munnabhai.” This Hindi film is a musical comedy about a underworld figure in Mumbai who begins to have visions of Mahatmas Ghandi. Screened at the United Nation’s auditorium, this was the first Hindi movie ever to be shown at the UN and at its ending was received with roaring, continuous applause and an exuberant question and answer session with the UN audience and the writer and director of the film. 
  10. “Welcome.” The film stars blockbuster hit-makers Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, who fall in love in this Hindi comedy romance.  Right behind “Om Shanti Om,” the movie was the second highest grossing hit of 2007.
