Top 10 Underrated Indie Movies

Saturday, March 19 by Yvonne Glasgow

The top 10 underrated indie movies cover an array of genres. But what they all have in common is that they were not made by a major studio, which is where the term independent film comes from. Independent films are made independently, they do not have the big bucks of the huge studios backing them up. Some independent films make a name for themselves, but even then they are usually forgotten about in a year or two, except by their cult followers.

  1. “The Evil Dead” gained a huge cult following in the horror film underground. This 1981 film by Sam Raimi, starring Bruce Campbell, just doesn't get as much attention as it used to. This clever film set in a back in the woods is about a group of young people who awake an ancient evil. It is a must see for any independent horror film fan.
  2. “Juno” was a controversial film in 2007 about a teenage girl who finds herself pregnant. The film has long since be forgotten by most people, which is why it is one of the top ten underrated indie movies on this list. “Juno” stars Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman.
  3. “Little Miss Sunshine” is a 2006 indie movie about a family who does everything they can to get their daughter to the finals of a beauty pageant. This underrated film shows a family's devotion to one another. It stars Steve Carell, Toni Collete and Greg Kinnear.
  4. “The Darjeeling Limited” is a wonderful independent film that follows thre brothers on a trek to find themselves. It is a fantastic film and very underrated. This film also has a wonderful cast, starring Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and Anjelica Huston.
  5. “Requiem For A Dream” was popular amongst many independent film fans when it was released in 2000. Ten plus years later, it is a virtuall unknown film. That puts it on this list of top ten underrated indie movies. This film about addiction stars Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly.
  6. “Grosse Point Blank” is an underrated independent film set in a Detroit suburb. It is a movie about a guy who left his life to be a professional assassin. Now he returns for his ten yea high school reunion. Hilarity and murder ensue. It stars John Cusack, Minnie Driver and Dan Aykroyd.
  7. “Being John Malkovichis a quirky independent film that came out in 1999. Somehow, through a portal, random people can enter into actor John Malkovich's head. This Spike Jonze film is very original, if not twisted. It stars John Cusack and Cameron Diaz.
  8. “The Royal Tenenbaums” is an independent film by Wes Anderson. Although this film was not underrated so much when it originally came out in 2001, it has now gone about the wayside, as do many independent films. This great movie about a talented, yet estranged, family stars Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke and Owen Wilson and Bill Murray.
  9. “Trainspotting” is one of the top ten underrated indie movies because it too has essentially been forgotten. This 1996 movie revolves around drugs, and it seems the drug scene movie have been more or less forgotten as of late. This film stars Ewan McGregor.
  10. “The Blair Witch Project” is on this list of top ten underrated indie movies because of the work that was put into making it out to be based on reality. This 1999 film about three student film makers who get lost in the woods and are never found again still strikes fear into those that watch it, real or not. It stars Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard.

This list is ridiculous, none of these movies are underrated. I’d say that every movie on this list except for The Darjeeling Limited is hugely popular. Films like The Evil Dead, Requiem For A Dream, Trainspotting and Blair Witch Project are some of the most well known and recognised indie movies ever made. I’m not sure that you grasp the meaning of the word underrated.
