If you enjoy movies, you should learn about independent films on DVD because they can be some of the best movies out there. Independent films may not often get as much attention as your typical blockbuster, but there are many independent films that have been quite successful that you may not even be aware of. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974) This horror movie was an independent film out of the Vortex production company. It is about a group of teens that stumble on a family of murderous cannibals. It became a cult classic and grossed almost $31 million.
"The Descent" (2005) This horror movie is an independent film about a group of friends that go on a cave expedition where they become targets. Are the cave dwellers real or are they a figment of our main character's mind? This was an independent film that got picked up by Lion's Gate Films but was originally with Celador Films.
"The Passion of the Christ" (2004) Mel Gibson's tale of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ became a huge success, grossing almost $400 million on a budget of around $30k. It was filmed out of his own independent production company, Icon.
"The Evil Dead" (1981) This independent film is a horror movie about a group of teens that head to a cabin in the woods where they inadvertently awaken demons. It became a cult classic and spawned a few sequels. Its production company was Renaissance Pictures and was created by Sam Raimi.
"Memento" (2000) This movie is about a man who can't remember anything about his life so when he finds out clues, he tattoos them onto himself. It is unique because it is shot in reverse; the ending is the beginning.
"The Magdalene Sisters" (2002) This Scottish Screen production company independent film told the true story of young Irish girls that were put into harsh reform schools for the smallest infractions, sometimes for having done nothing at all.
"The Terminator" (1984) This huge blockbuster that had a few sequels was created as an independent film. It is about a cyborg sent from the future to kill a boy that will become the leader of the human revolution against the machines. The production company was Hemdale Films.
"Brokeback Mountain" (2005) This independent film became a critical success and while it may not have been a mainstream blockbuster, it set a precedent in the film industry on the subject of homosexuality. It won an Oscar at the Academy Awards.
"Pulp Fiction" (1994) This movie intertwines four different tales about violence and redemption. It is an independent film by Quentin Tarantino and is a cult classic.
"Resevoir Dogs" (1992) This is another independent film on DVD by Quentin Tarantino. It is about a jewelry heist that doesn't go as planned and the men that are all part of it. Every member of the heist only knows another member by a color such as Mr. Blue or Mr. Blonde. Dog Eat Dog Productions started this film.
