10 Best Indie Romances In Movies

Sunday, March 27 by Robin Raven

When looking for the perfect movie for a relaxing night in, check out one of the 10 best indie romances in movies. These movie break the traditional, romantic comedy mold. While some are, indeed, romantic and funny, independent filmmakers have more freedom to branch out and experiment with storytelling structure, dialogue, and traditional tropes.

  1. "The Virgin Suicides" is a hauntingly beautiful film. It's one of the few film adaptations that does justice to the book it's based on. In fact, several scenes are word-for-word from the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides. The love that neighborhood boys feel for the tragic Lisbon sisters carries the entire film.
  2. "500 Days of Summer" is about a girl named Summer. Actually, it's about the love the character Sam feels for her. Zooey Deschanel gives a star-making performance, and the entire cast (including a young Chloe Moretz) is strong.
  3. "Harold and Maude" is a masterpiece movie from Hal Ashby. With a picture-perfect soundtrack by Cat Stevens, the enchanting friendship and deeper-than-romance love story between Harold and Maude may seem shocking in theory. Yet, within the world of the movie and the reality of the characters, it's absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful. You will never forget this indie romance.
  4. "Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind" is a truly original, exuberant romantic comedy. It stars Jim Carrey as Joel Barish and Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski. Stars like Kirsten Dunst also have smaller parts. The fun, deep movie showcases love in all its pain and glory.
  5. "Gas Food Lodging" is one of the greatest independent films ever made. It's a masterpiece of Allison Anders, and Fairuza Balk gives an award-winning performance as young Shade. Shade's love story is sweet and strong, prompting the young girl to dress up as Olivia Newton-John to impress her love who has an affinity for the singing superstar. The poignant, deep story twists in unpredictable ways, and it's a story of love of multiple kinds.
  6. "August Rush" is an independent movie starring Keri Russell (of "Felicity" and "MMC" fame). It follows the story of two star-crossed lovers who are forced apart by fate and their enduring love for one another and their son, who is also forced apart from them.
  7. "Memento" is a rather memorable movie about a man struggling with memory loss. A man who feels a deep love for his wife who has passed away goes on a mission to avenge her death. It's the central love story that stays at the heart of this unique indie movie.
  8. "Romance and Cigarettes" is an indie romantic musical. It takes a strong look at what happens when love doesn't end up with a happy ending. The movie features James Gandolfini as a man who has long been married to his childhood sweetheart and follows the unraveling of what that love really means.
  9. "Wristcutters: A Love Story" is, like its title implies, a darker romantic tale. It takes place in the afterworld for those who take their own life. At  the heart of the movie is young Zia, who slits his wrists and discovers that the pain of life transcends death. So does love.
  10. "Sordid Lives" is a modern classic, independent film by Del Shores. The theme song will stick with you for some time. The movie tells many tales, and it is a love story at heart. It features such stars as Olivia Newton-John, who plays against type as an ex-con.
