The 10 best Indie romance films are made outside the studio eye, allowing the filmmakers to tell the story they pictured in their mind exactly how they imagined it to be. Most of these movies star smaller name actors, but everyone worked to make sure these romance films reached a high level of excellence.
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” – This movie is almost anti-relationship, but is a brilliant look at the ups and downs of love and remains one of the best Indie romance films ever made. Jim Carey and Kate Winslet star as a couple who agree to have memories of each other erased from their minds.
“500 Days of Summer” – Marc Webb earned the job of directing a “Spider-Man” movie thanks to his work on this, one of the best Indie romance films ever made. The movie features Tom, a young man who desperately wants to find his one true love, and the relationship he shares with a girl named Summer.
“Shakespeare in Love” – In the ‘90s, the Weinstei brothers began to search out the best in Indie movies and this remains one of the best Indie romance films of all time. Joseph Fiennes stars as Shakespeare in this film that won both Gwyneth Paltrow and Judi Dench Oscars.
“Before Sunrise” – Richard Linklater created one of the best Indie romance films of all time in 1995. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as two people who meet on a train in Vienna and spend the day with each other. The movie earned a sequel, “Before Sunset” nine years later.
“Wild at Heart” – Nic Cage and Diane Lane star in this, one of the best Indie romance films of all time. David Lynch directs this film about a couple in love who run off together, finding themselves in danger from the mother of the girl who hires someone to kill her daughter’s boyfriend.
“Harold and Maude” – This is one of the strangest of the best Indie romance films. The movie is about a young man, infatuated by death, who develops a close relationship with a 79-year old woman. When Harold shuns every girl his mother hooks him up with, he decides he wants to marry Maude.
“Reality Bites” – In the early stages of the grunge era, Ben Stiller directs this, one of the best Indie romance films ever made. The movie follows a group of friends in Houston and their attempts to find love. Stiller stars, alongside Ethan Hawke and Winona Ryder.
“Garden State” – Zach Braff directs this movie, one of the best Indie romance films of all time. Braff stars as a Hollywood actor who returns home when his mother dies. He meets a young woman, played by Natalie Portman, and the two work to help each other with their own personal dysfunctions.
“Sideways” – Alexander Payne directs this, one of the best Indie romance films of all time. Two men take a trip to some vineyards to celebrate the engagement of one of them. Jack decides to have one last sexual fling before marriage while Miles meets a woman who helps him recover from the depression he slipped into when his wife left him.
“Punch Drunk Love” – P.T. Anderson directs this, one of the best Indie romance films of all time. Adam Sandler stars as a neurotic man who meets a woman who helps him level out his anger issues. Emily Watson stars as the woman and Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as the manager of a phone sex line.
