10 Best Independent Short Films

Saturday, February 5 by Amin El-Gazzar

The ten best independent short films cover every subject and every genre including short stories, documentaries, and animation. Since the beginning of filmmaking the industry has produced short films. Every year awards are presented at independent short film festivals, where the best are recognized for that year.

  1. "O’Henry’s Full House" includes four short stories from the book "The Four Million." These stories include: "The Gift of the Magi," "The Ransom of Red Chief," "The Cop and the Anthem" and "The Retrieved Reformation." These old stories have stood the test of time and are still considered among the best independent short films.
  2. "A Drunk History" is a collection three short films that won the Sundance Film Festival for 2010. They filmed several drunks trying to relate a historical event. Then they hired “A list” actors to re-enact the scenes. Some are funny, others offensive, but all are interesting. This amusing look at history is an independent short film you don't want to miss.
  3. "Food Fight" is a documentary detailing World War II, by covering the foods that were popular in the countries in conflict. World War II begins with sushi bombing hamburger. Hamburger fires back with all the toppings and condiments it has at its disposal. Meanwhile, Italian sausage attacks English fish and chips. If only war could really be fought this way, the hilarious look at war makes this one of the best independent short films.
  4. "Old Fangs" is an animated story of three creatures traveling together in a car and their adventures during their journey. This film received an award at the Sundance Film Festival 2010. It is certainly interesting to watch.
  5. "Alive in Joberg" by Neill Blomcamp. This documentary is set in District 9, Johannesburg, South Africa. The aliens are attacking! And the army is trying to keep the people safe. This tongue in cheek story is considered one of the best independent films presented at the Sundance Film Festival.
  6. "Deadline: Post-it Stop Motion" presented by students from the Savannah School of Art and Design. This cute animation shows a young man working at his computer all day while the post-it notes on the wall above his head change shapes. This very clever animation was considered one of the best independent short film entries at the Sundance Film Festival.
  7. "Post-it Motion" is another post-it note stop action animation is a clever entry by college students. This was not as long as Deadline but certainly took as much time to create as the imaginations of these young people covered an entire stair case and floor with their some of their creations. Very clever short film.
  8. "Clock Tower" is a beautiful animated short film that only last a couple of minutes. This independent short film is interesting to watch. Watch it and you'll agree this filmmaker has a bright future.
  9. "Purged" a Damning Aniboom Animation (2006) by James Lee and other students at the Griffith Film School, Queensland College of Art. Very well done animation takes a look at the despair of slavery.
  10. "Electropolis" is an animation by Kevin McCullough and other students at Sheridan College. Have you ever wondered what the little guy in the walk light does when he isn’t telling you it is safe to cross the street? This cute film examines the life of one of these little fellows and the friends he makes at his corner. This is certainly one of the best independent short films created by art students.
