10 Best Independent Movies 2008

The best independent movies of 2008 were made out of the studio system by cutting edge independent filmmakers allowed to make the movie the way they believed in. Some of the movies feature big stars while others feature smaller names, but all resulted in movies that were critically acclaimed and received a modicum of success after their release.

  1. “Slumdog Millionaire” Danny Boyle directed this American Bollywood film, which is one of the best independent movies of 2008. The movie about a street kid who gets a chance to appear on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” won the Academy Award for Best Film.
  2. “The Wrestler” Darren Aronofsky directs Mickey Rourke in one of the best independent movies of 2008. The movie follows the life of a washed up professional wrestler who tries to maintain relevance in the poor conditions of the independent wrestling scene.
  3. “Th Brothers Bloom” Rian Johnson followed up his successful debut feature “Brick” with one of the best independent movies of 2008. The movie follows two conmen brothers who find one last mark before they hang it up for good.
  4. “Son of Rambow” This Garth Jennings-directed film is one of the best independent movies of 2008. Two young boys in the U.K. decide to remake the movie “First Blood” using a group of their friends and a small video camera.
  5. “Otis” This horror movie is one of the best independent movies of 2008. The movie tells the story of a serial killer named Otis who abducts girls, forcing them to play out the role of his prom date. Daniel Stern and Kevin Pollack co-star in the movie.
  6. “Happy-Go-Lucky” Mike Leigh writes and directs this, one of the best independent movies of 2008. Sally Hawkins stars as a London girl who is optimistic and cheerful despite everyone around her trying to bring her down. Comedian Eddie Marsan stars as her driving instructor.
  7. “Diary of the Dead” George Romero continues his independently produced zombie series in one of the best independent movies of 2008. The movie, shot in 2007 but not released in cinemas until 2008, takes the first person camera style and approaches people at the start of the outbreak.
  8. “Midnight Meat Train” Based on the story by horror author Clive Barker, this is one of the best independent movies of 2008. Bradley Cooper stars as a photographer who comes across a serial killer played by Vinnie Jones. The movie was released in dollar movie cinemas instead of major markets on its release.
  9. “Linewatch” Cuba Gooding Jr. stars in one of the best independent movies of 2008. Gooding plays a border patrol agent who is forced to help an old friend who threatens his family. The movie was released straight-to-DVD in 2008.
  10. “Smart People” Dennis Quaid and Ellen Page star in this, one of the best independent movies of 2008. Quaid plays an arrogant, bored English professor who can’t connect with normal people. When his adopted brother arrives and tries to help both his brother and niece, who is developing her dad's personality.
