The 10 best independence movies show how freedom can be the most important thing to an individual, even if it costs them their lives. To the characters in these movies, freedom means many different things: freedom from a tyrannical king, from society or even from themselves. These independence movies are so engaging that viewers will be riveted to the screen.
“Amistad”. The tale of slaves who revolted on their forced overseas journey to American, this movie shows how much freedom can mean to an individual. Moving and dramatic despite being set inside a courtroom, “Amistad” is one of the best liberation movies ever made.
“Glory”. The winner of three Oscars, this movie, starring Denzel Washington, tells the tale of a troop of African American’ fighting in the Civil War. For showing what independence meant to enslaved individuals, “Glory” is one of the best movies about independence.
“The Patriot”. This recent movie follows a farming family, headed by Mel Gibson, as they try to avoid becoming involved in fighting the Revolutionary War, but find that themselves unable. For showing the devastation of the war and the division between colonists who wanted to fight and those that wanted to avoid war, “The Patriot” is one of the best independence movies.
“To End All Wars”. This independence film shows the harsh treatment Allied POW’s endured in a Japanese camp during WWII. The consequences of a failed escape attempt are disastrous, but a turn in the tide of the war gives hope to the prisoners. The final scene in which the prisoners are released is particularly moving, and quite possibly makes it one of the best independence movies of all time.
“Gladiator”. This action movie shows the depths man will go to free themselves and other humans from tyranny. Stunning fight scenes and moving speeches make this film one of the greatest liberation movies of all time.
“Enemy at the Gates”. In this action film, a famous Russian sniper tirelessly works to fight the German invasion of Stalingrad. Hearing of his success and seeing how he is giving Russian people hope, Germany sends in their own sniper to take him down. Set during one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, and showing the liberation of the Russian city, “Enemy at the Gates” is a great independence movie.
“The Shawshank Redemption”. This moving film follows a wrongly-convicted man as he struggles to maintain his humanity during his life-imprisonment. When it all becomes too much, he decides to liberate himself. “The Shawshank Redemption” is one of the best movies about liberation, particularly liberating oneself, ever made.
“Flags of our Fathers”. This recent movie focuses on the six men who raise the American flag over Iwo Jima during World War II. The film shows how important it was to liberate oppressed people during the war, but also how important it was for soldiers to free themselves from the guilt of their wartime actions. “Flags of our Fathers” is a great independence movie.
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. The story of mentally-ill patients who banded together to overthrow the dictator-like nurse that ran the hospital, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is a story of the need for independence and freedom, even if only in mental form.
“Schindler’s List”. This award-winning movie follows German Schindler as he saves thousands of Jews from German execution in World War II. Schindler’s actions save himself as well as Jews, though, as it permits him to begin to forgive himself for his previous misdeeds. “Schindler’s List” is an excellent liberation movie.
