The 10 best horror movies from the 80's instill fear in the hearts of the people that watch them to this day. Sure, they do not have all of the special effects that the movies nowadays have, but they were still scary. Ghosts, goblins, things that go bump in the night and even supernatural killers that never seem to die, all find their way onto this list of great 80's flicks.

  1. “Poltergeist” is a 1982 film about a family that moves into a house that is haunted by something very evil. The house swallows the family's little girl and they have to hire a creepy psychic lady to come in and save her, and the rest of them. This best horror movie of the 80's stars Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams and Heather O'Rourke.
  2. “The Shining,” a movie from 1980 based on a Stephen King book, was enough to make people not want to stay in hotels. This creepy movie directed by Stanley Kubrick is about a family that become caretakers of a hotel, trapped in the winter, when the ghosts of the place start to mess with the husband's head. This 80's horror film stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd.
  3. “An American Werewolf In London” was a 1981 film about a couple of American tourists visiting Britain. They get attacked by a werewolf and one of them is lucky enough to die. The other one finds himself cursed. This movie contains one of the best shifting scenes from human to wolf. Stars Griffin Dunne and David Naughton.
  4. “The Evil Dead” started out as a college film project and turned into a cult classic. This 80's film directed and written by Sam Raimi is about a group of friends who wake something evil up while staying at an old cabin in the woods. Best scene- the tree rape. Stars Bruce Campbell.
  5. “The Lost Boys” has recently had a couple sequels made, but they are no where near as awesome as the original. 8. “Fright Night” brings a comical edge to horror. This 1985 film about a guy who thinks vampires have moved in next door is great comic relief, but it is still scary in it's own right. Stars Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale and Amanda Bearse.
  9. “Children of the Corn” is another Stephen King film adaptation. This best horror movie is about a group of children that murder all of the adults in their small town.
