Family Law Movies Based On True Stories

Are you having trouble finding family law movies based on true stories? They’re not easy to locate. While Hollywood has produced a number of great movies about family law, including several Oscar-winning films, most of them are fictitious stories. Here are five excellent family law movies based on real-life events.

  1. “A Cry For Help: The Tracey Thurman Story.” “A Cry For Help: The Tracey Thurman Story” is a 1989 television drama based on a true story about a domestic abuse victim. When her husband continues to beat her after she files a restraining order—and even brutally attacks her in front of the police—an American woman sues her city and police department for failing to protect her. Nancy McKeon stars in this Emmy-nominated movie, which also features Dale Midkiff and Graham Jarvis.
  2. “Evelyn.” “Evelyn” is a 2002 Irish-American production starring Sophie Vavasseur and Pierce Brosnan. The poignant family drama is loosely based on the true story of Irish painter and musician Desmond Doyle, and his lengthy legal fight to be reunited with his children after their mother abandoned them. The award-winning movie also stars Aidan Quinn and Julianna Margulies.
  3. “The Burning Bed.” “The Burning Bed” is a 1984 television drama based on a shocking nonfiction book by Faith McNulty. The story centers on an abused American housewife and mother. After thirteen years of domestic violence at the hands of her husband, the woman sets fire to their bed while her husband is sleeping, killing him and destroying their home. This Golden Globe-winning film stars Farrah Fawcett Paul Le Mat, and Richard Masur.
  4. “The Price Of A Broken Heart.” “The Price Of A Broken Heart” is another American family law movie that aired on television in 1999. The story is based on a real-life landmark legal battle. It centers on a woman who sued her husband for divorce—and then sued his mistress for breaking up their marriage. Park Overall, Laura Innes, and Timothy Carhart star in this worthy film.
  5. “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” is a 1993 biographical drama about American singer Tina Turner. It tells of her rise to stardom from a life of domestic abuse at the hands of her husband, singer Ike Turner. This Oscar-nominated movies stars Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, and Rae'Ven Larrymore Kelly.
