The list of the 10 most popular family movies includes some of the best films ever made with endearing characters, great storylines and sometimes even wonderful songs. The great thing about a good family movie is that young and old alike can gather around, share the experience, and enjoy laughs and excitement equally. Afterward, families can discuss what they’ve scene, especially the moral messages behind some of these films. Watching these movies over and over can become a household tradition.

  1. “The Wizard of Oz” Everyone knows this classic, which is one of the most popular family movies. Until the advent of home video, the once-yearly showing of this movie on network TV was a major, not-to-be-missed event. Dorothy and her newfound friends follow the yellow brick road, avoiding tragedy and hoping to fulfill their dreams.
  2. “Beauty and the Beast” This may be the jewel in the Disney animation crown, one of the most popular family movies ever. Belle finds herself in a cursed castle guarded over by a beast. Only after she slowly falls in love with him can his fate be changed. This was the first animated movie to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
  3. “E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial” A Steven Spielberg classic, this film is about a lovable alien who has found his way to earth. Some children—one played by a young Drew Barrymore—take him in and try to hide him. After the authorities get involved, however, things get ugly fast. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards.
  4. “The Princess Bride” This 1980s film has developed a real cult following and is funny and friendly to the whole family. Buttercup loses her Wesley early in the movie only to see him return later, this time as a pirate… sort of. Wesley teams up with an unlikely group to rescue her from an evil prince.
  5. “Shrek” Perhaps the best animated movie not made by Disney, this an uproariously funny film about an ogre—voiced by Mike Meyers—who wants no part of being a hero gets sucked into a fairy tale of sorts. Teamed with Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Shrek take on all foes, becoming one of the most memorable characters in animation history.
  6. “Toy Story” This movie was the first to exclusively use computer-generated graphics for its animation. Not only was it groundbreaking in that regard, but it also contributed many beloved characters into American culture. When choosing a movie for the evening, many families keep this one close at hand.
  7. “To Kill a Mockingbird” This movie, based on the best-selling book, is a great film to watch with the family. It focuses on the lives of two young children and has a great lesson about justice, right and wrong, and relations between the races.
  8. “It’s a Wonderful Life” This movie has evolved into a Christmastime classic, starring the legendary Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a man who can never seem to escape his hometown. One of the most-watched and most popular family movies, audiences love Bailey’s resolve and how he responds when he sees what the world would have been like without him.
  9. “The Lion King” This movie became an instant classic upon its release in 1994. It's the story of a young lion who sees his father’s demise, runs away, grows up and decides to reclaim his kingdom. A story with great music, adventure and good bad guys, it’s certainly one of the most popular family movies ever.
  10. “Home Alone” This movie launched the brief career of then-adorable Macaulay Culkin and is one of the most popular family movies. A family leaving on a long vacation miscounts children, leaving one at home. The young man must fend for himself, including holding at bay two bumbling thieves.
