10 Best Family Dog Movies

The 10 best family dog movies can often be a source of enjoyment for the entire family, for both the old and the young.  If you love to watch movies about man’s best friend, then be sure to watch any of these family oriented films, which will leave you with a warm and comfortable feeling that only a dog movie can create.

  1. “The Incredible Journey”-This Disney film, which tells the story of three extraordinary animals on a journey to return to their family, is both heartwarming and exciting.  Although there are humans in the story, most of the attention is on the animals, and by the end you want them to find their owners almost as badly as they do.
  2. “Homeward Bound”-This film, a remake of the original, was released in the early 1990s and featured a truly stunning cast of actors as the voices of the animals, including Sally Field, Michael J. Fox, and the late Don Ameche.  This film is just as stirring as its predecessor, and even the hardest of hearts will be crying by the end.
  3. “Beethoven”-This classic family dog movie tells the story of the enormous (and enormously funny) St. Bernard Beethoven and the havoc he endlessly creates for his hapless owners.  Although this film produced several sequels, this first installment in the series is most certainly the best, and will have the entire family in stitches.
  4. “Marley and Me”-This film, another dog family classic, is one that is sure to both touch you and warm your heart.  Featuring the warm talents of both Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, in addition to the wonderful presence if Marley himself, you can be sure that this film will be a joy to everyone in the family, even while it is also heartbreakingly sad.
  5. “101 Dalmatians”  (animated)-This Disney animated classic tells the story of two Dalmatians named Pongo and Perdita as they attempt to save their puppies (and numerous others) from the villainous Cruella De Vil, who wants to make them into coats.  With its blend of classic Disney animation and the antics of the clumsy henchmen Jasper and Horace, this is one dog family movie that everyone can enjoy.
  6. “101 Dalmatians” (live)-This live action update of the cartoon is also an excellent family dog movie, due to both its humor and its cast.  The casting of the inimitable of Glenn Close as the maniacally evil Cruella De Vil was a stroke of pure genius, and it is definitely a pleasure seeing her on the screen.
  7. “Benji the Hunted”-This classic, although often overlooked by some, is still a great family dog film.  It tells the story of the indomitable dog Benji as he attempts to rescue a band of orphaned mountain lion cubs from the man predators that seek to eat them, especially a dangerous wolf.  Although one of the cubs meets a sad end, the film as a whole has a happy ending, making it ideal for kids of all ages.
  8. “Cats and Dogs”-Although some thought this movie was not very good at all, it is actually funnier and more sophisticated than is commonly assumed.  With its clever twist on the ancient antagonism between cats and dogs (although with the humorous exploits of the main villain, Mr. Tinkles), this is a very funny and enjoyable movie for the whole family.
  9. “Fluke”-This somewhat overlooked dog family film tells the story of a man who is reincarnated as a dog after he is killed in a car crash and of his struggle to accept his family’s moving on.  Although a bit darker in tone than many dog family movies, this is nevertheless a film that most families will enjoy.
  10. “Old Yeller”-No list of dog family movies would be complete without this heart-wrenching classic made by Walt Disney.  It is, without a doubt, one of the best dog films that you are every likely to see, even though it has one of the saddest endings of any movie ever made.  You can rest assured that every member of your family, from old to young, will enjoy this delightful dog family film.
