10 Best Black Family Movies
The ten best Black family movies range from comedies meant for the entire family to enjoy to serious dramas about African-American familial relationships that can be viewed by kids, but under parental guidance. A number of African-American actors have received critical acclaim for their roles in such heavy hitters as “The Color Purple” while others have made a name for themselves in comedy.
“The Nutty Professor”
This comedy starring Eddie Murphy shows him as overweight Professor Sherman Klump. He discovers that a chemical potion turns him into a confident, lean looking and smooth talking ladies man and, after drinking his own potion, must juggle his double life.
“The Karate Kid”
Jaden Smith stars in this remake of the original “Karate Kid” starring Ralph Macchio. This family movie is great for kids for its inspiring tale of perseverance, determination and standing up against bullies. Jackie Chan stars as the Kung Fu master, a role played by Pat Morita in the original Karate Kid” movies.
“Madea’s Family Reunion”
Tyler Perry, Blair Underwood and Maya Angelou make up the cast of this movie. The film centers around Madea, a gun-totting granny, and her family reunion that includes two troubled nieces and a runaway.
“Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail”
A car chase followed by a fierce temper lands Madea in jail. This assembles a crew of miscreants including her weird family, fellow jailbirds and a junkie named Candace Washington who falls into Madea’s protective care.
This action-comedy film about a Black superhero is a family movie to see. Will Smith stars as a troublemaking superhero that falls out of the public’s graces. Jason Bateman plays the public relations professional who attempts to repair Hancock’s image.
“The Pursuit of Happyness”
Will Smith shows off his acting chops in this movie based on a true story. Christopher Gardner, the inspiration for the film, spent his entire savings on his invention called the “Bone Density Scanner” and in the process became homeless. His second chance came in the form of an unpaid internship. The story is in the struggles that come after, as he tries to provide shelter for his young son.
This is one of the best films about a Black musician. Jamie Foxx’s portrayal of rhythm and blues legend Ray Charles won him an Oscar for this movie. He portrays Ray Charles to utter perfection.
“Akeelah and the Bee”
Released in 2006, “Akeelah and the Bee” is a fantastic Black family movie for the entire family. The story centers around Akeelah, an eleven-year-old who is brilliant in spelling bee competitions. It is an inspiring and uplifting film suitable for children and the entire family.
“The Color Purple"
This is a classic movie about the struggles of African-Americans living in the American South between 1919-1940. It tells the tribulations of the life and trials of a young Black woman played by Whoopi Goldberg in a remarkable debut. Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover also star in this Steven Spielberg film.
Released in 2007, this is a movie about an African-American family: the Whitfields. Comprising of three daughters, three sons and the family matriarch, drama ensues when everyone reunites for Christmas.
