The top ten drama movies include films that make a viewer think, without relying on over-the-top action or comedy. These movies take serious subjects and creates movies that are enlightening as well as entertaining. The best drama is one that sparks discussion long after the end credits have rolled.

  1. “Magnolia”P.T. Anderson directs this masterpiece, one of the top ten drama movies ever made. The film follows separate but interconnected storylines including a TV host who confronts his daughter concerning inappropriate behavior and a self-help guru who reconnects with his estranged father.
  2. “The Shawshank Redemption” – The greatest movie to be based on a Stephen King novel, this is one of the top ten drama movies of all time. The prison drama is often overlooked in the argument of the year’s best movies, thanks to “Pulp Fiction” and “Forest Gump,” but stands up well to both of them.
  3. “The Godfather”Francis Ford Coppola directs this movie, one of the top ten drama movies ever made. The movie, following a powerful mafia family in New York, was nominated for eleven Oscars, winning three including Best Actor for Marlon Brando as the head of the family.
  4. “12 Angry Men” – This Sidney Lumet movie remains in one room for almost the entire running time but remains one of the top ten drama movies of all time. Lumet is able to work with various camera angles to create a sense of claustrophobia that makes this movie an amazing watch.
  5. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” – Jack Nicholson won an Oscar in this, one of the top ten drama movies ever made. The movie, based on the novel by Ken Kesey, shows life inside a mental asylum as a delinquent brings a sense of anarchy into the asylum.
  6. “Casablanca” – Humphrey Bogart stars in one of his most memorable roles in this, one of the top ten drama movies ever made. The film takes place in World War II and centers on an American expatriate who must choose between love and honor. It has one of the best closing lines in the history of cinema.
  7. “Citizen Kane”Orson Welles created his masterpiece in this, one of the top ten drama movies ever made. Welles stars as Kane, a character loosely based on media mogul William Randolph Hearst. The movie is often listed at the top of many critics’ best movies lists.
  8. “American History X”Edward Norton stars in this, one of the top ten drama movies of all time. The movie deals with racial insecurities as Norton plays a skinhead who goes to prison and realizes that racism is not the answer. When he gets out he sees his little brother is following in his footsteps.
  9. “To Kill a Mockingbird” – Gregory Peck stars as one of the most beloved characters in cinema history in this, one of the top ten drama movies ever made. Peck is an attorney who sets out to defend a black man accused of a rape he never committed in the Deep South.
  10. “There Will be Blood” – P.T. Anderson was nominated for an Oscar for directing this, one of the top ten drama movies ever made. The movie is a horror drama as a man builds an oil empire, stepping on everyone along the way from employees to friends to his own adopted son.
