Shawshank Redemption Quotes

“Shawshank Redemption” quotes are memorable and alternate between funny, inspiring and heartbreaking. Following Andy Dufrense as he serves his murder sentence in Shawshank prison, “The Shawshank Redemption” is one of those movies that is filled with great quotes.

  1. “I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you'll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord; your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.” As Warden Norton introduces his prisoners to Shawshank, he also gives them a taste of his tyranny and hypocrisy. Andy plays his game for a while, but ultimately exposes him for who he is once he escapes.
  2. “What is your malfunction, you fat barrel of monkey spunk?” Captain Hadley, played brilliantly by Clancy Brown, is full of great one-liners. He is both intimidating and powerful, leaving the prisoners cowering before facing his wrath.
  3. “I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged.” In his narration, Red expresses the bittersweet feelings he has after Andy escapes in this “Shawshank Redemption” quote. He is lonely now that his friend is gone, but glad he was strong enough to leave.
  4. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing, and no good thing ever dies.” In a letter left for Red to find once released from Prison, Andy delivers these words of wisdom to Red. Red is inspired to go and find his friend and try to live a happy life.
  5. “I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight.” In this quote, Red relays the story of how The Sisters, a prison gang, abused Andy for his first two years in Shawshank.
  6. “You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific?” Andy finishes this “Shawshank Redemption” quote by telling Red “They say it has no memory. That's where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory.” When Andy gets out, he retires at the Pacific Ocean in Mexico.
  7. “It was outdoor detail – and May is one damn fine month to be working outdoors” Red relays this information in his narration from “The Shawkshank Redemption.” Him and the other men volunteer for the work just for the chance to be outside.
  8. “We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like free men.” Red says this quote after their outdoor detail, the men are treated to a couple of beers, a sweet taste of life outside of Shawshank
  9. “It's my life. Don't you understand? IT'S MY LIFE!” After the warden denies his request to give certain information about his murder trial to a judge, Andy belts out this quote. The warden is apathetic, but Andy is full on conviction since he is the one stuck in prison.
  10. “Rehabilitated? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means.” In his final appearance before the parole board, Red delivers this quote. After being denied several times for parole, Red has a different outlook on life and his time spent in prison. This mature speech leads to his release from Shawshank, where he reunites with Andy.
