The "Fullmetal Alchemist" characters take viewers on a journey to a fictional 20th Century world created by Hiromu Arakawa. In the "Fullmetal Alchemist" paradigm, alchemy is the most sophisticated form of science. During the story the namesake "Fullmetal Alchemist" character, Edward, seeks the infamous Philosopher's Stone, which is said to grant power to the alchemist who possesses it.

  1. Edward Elric. Edward is given the codename Fullmetal Alchemist due to his artificial metal limbs, which resulted from an alchemy accident. The elder of the two Elri brothers, Edward is a gifted alchemist and the youngest State Alchemist in history.

  2. Alphonse Elric. Alphonse's "Fullmetal Alchemy" character has a tragic past, the result of which is that his soul gets transferred in a suit of armor when an accident takes place during a forbidden alchemy ritual attempt to bring the boys' mother back from the dead. Al helps Edward search for the Philosopher's Stone.

  3. Winry Rockbell. Winry is the Elric brothers' oldest friend. She is a talented mechanic who helped attach Edward's artificial limbs after the brothers' fateful accident.

  4. Pinako Rockbell. Pinako is Winry's grandmother and auto-mail (artificial metal limbs) expert. She watches over Edward and Alphonse after the loss of their parents.

  5. Scar. Scar is another talented alchemist with a beef against State Alchemists. This is due to historic violence toward his people by the State to force them to embrace alchemy and abandon their traditional ways. Scar has vowed to kill State Alchemists and believes his cause is righteous.

  6. The Homunculi. Homunculi are mysterious beings that represent lust, greed, envy, gluttony, wrath, pride and sloth. Some of the homunculi take the form of other "Fullmetal Alchemist" characters, or are represented by existing characters at times.

  7. Roy Mustang. Roy Mustang has complex ties to many of the "Fullmetal Alchemist" characters. As a soldier, he was forced to carry out violence against Scar's people, Ishibalans, and executed Winry's parents for their involvement in the conflict. He knew Edward and Alphonse's father and believes Edward's power is his ticket to power.

  8. Riza Hawkeye. Riza Hawkeye is Roy Mustang's aide and advisor. She specializes in firearms, particularly pistols.

  9. Maes Hughes. Hughes is a Leiutenant Colonel and close friend to Roy Mustang. Maes is a family man who always keeps his wife and daughter in mind.

  10. Alex Louis Armstrong. This "Fullmetal Alchemist" character is large and muscular and is another State Alchemist. Despite his imposing appearance, he dislikes violence and often has emotional outbursts and breakdowns from either joy or sadness.
