  1. "Jaws" (1975). This classic thriller is about  a great white shark that menaces a small seaside town during the height of tourist season. Directed by Steven Spielberg, "Jaws" scared a generation of moviegoers out of the ocean and is known as one of the best monster movies of all time. The movie won three Oscars and was nominated for a fourth for Best Picture.
  2. "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991). This scary thriller stars Jodie Foster as an FBI cadet who is on the trail of serial killer Buffalo Bill. To get into his head, she must consult with the notorious serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins in one of his best-known roles. Both Hopkins and Foster won Academy Awards for their performances, and the film also won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
  3. "Seven" (1995). Another serial killer thriller, this one stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as a pair of detectives tracking down a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his inspiration. Known for its mind-blowing twist ending and dark cinematography, "Seven" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Editing.
  4. "Alien" (1979). This classic thriller, starring Sigourney Weaver, follows a team of miners on a distant planet as they run into some strange and unfriendly creatures. When one of them attacks a crew member, terror is unleashed for the whole team as they fight to escape. The movie won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects and spawned several sequels.
  5. "Sin City" (2005). Adapted from a series of graphic novels, this visually arresting thriller tells the interweaving stories of various miscreants in the dirty town of Basin City. The violent tale of sin and corruption was nominated for the Technical Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
