The best mystery thrillers in cinema history take their ideas and create mind bending, intriguing stories that rise above the typical entries in the genre. These movies create thrilling adventures that keep the viewers guessing until the end and, in some cases, keep them questioning the motives long after the final credits roll.

  1. “Inception” Christopher Nolan directs this mind-bending movie, one of the best mystery thrillers released in 2010. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a man who is able to get into the dreams of anyone and extract information. Things get out of control when they are asked to enter someone’s mind and implant thoughts instead of extracting them.
  2. “Rear Window” Alfred Hitchcock directs this, one of the best mystery thrillers of all time about a man who believes he witnesses a murder from his apartment window. James Stewart stars as a man confined to a wheelchair who finds himself in danger when someone discovers he is being watched.
  3. “The Usual Suspects” Bryan Singer directs one of the best mystery thrillers ever made as the details of a robbery are told by one of the men involved. Kevin Spacey stars as the man being grilled about the mysterious Keyser Soze in this Oscar winning movie.
  4. “Se7en” David Fincher creates this movie, one of the best mystery thrillers ever created. Brad Pitt stars as a fresh faced homicide detective joining forces with a grizzled veteran played by Morgan Freeman. The two end up in a horrifying case where people are being killed based on the seven deadly sins.
  5. “Memento” Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough second film is one of the best mystery thrillers of all time. Guy Pierce stars as a man with short term memory loss trying to find the person who killed his wife. The movie is told in reverse order, starting at the end and finishing at the beginning.

  8. “The Third Man” Orson Welles stars in his Carol Reed directed film, one of the best mystery thrillers of all time. Holly Martins arrives in Vienna to visit a friend, only to learn his friend has died. Soon, Martins believes he sees his friend and is swept into a web of intrigue.
  9. “Chinatown” Roman Polanski directs this movie, which received eleven Oscar nominations and remains one of the best mystery thrillers ever made. Jack Nicholson stars as a private detective investigating a case that comes across a scheme based around water rights in Southern California.
  10. “L.A. Confidential” Based on the novel by mystery writer James Ellroy, “L.A. Confidential” remains one of the best mystery thrillers ever filmed. The movie, which received nine Oscar nominations, tells the story of a police investigation in L.A. and the three, very different, police officers involved.
