10 Best History-Based Movies

Travel back in time with the 10 best history-based movies. Movies that are history-based can be educational as well as entertaining. The history-based movie genre has been widely popular since the creation of film.

  1. “Schindler’s List” (1993). This inspiring tale is about one of the darkest times in the world’s history. The movie is based on Oskar Schindler and how he becomes concerned about the Nazi persecution of his Jewish workforce during World War II.
  2. “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962). This history-based movie is about a British military figure and his conflicted loyalties during wartime. This epic film exposes a lot of controversy of the historic events.
  3. “Saving Private Ryan” (1998). This war history-based movie will probably make you cry. Due to the lost of his brothers in action, one paratrooper is set to be released from duty. The movie is the story of the group of US soldiers that go behind enemy lines to save him so he can be sent home.
  4. “Braveheart” (1995). Although many critics feel this movie has a little too much Holywood magic in it, this tale of a 13th Century Scotsman is still history-based. The movie focuses on William Wallace and his attempt to overthrow the English rule on his country. The movie adds a lot of romance that many argue isn’t historically accurate but the heroic acts of Wallace are.
  5. “The Elephant Man” (1980).  This history-based movie migh break your heart and remind you to never judge a person by their outward appearance. In the movie a Victorian surgeon rescues a disfigured man from a freak-show. The surgeon finds a highly intelligent and sensitive man underneath the disfigurements.
  6. “The Passion of Joan of Arc” (1928). There have been many history-based movies about Joan of Arc and this is hands down the best. The movie details the trial of Joan and the church’s effort to force her to recant that her actions were based off of holy visions from God.
  7. “Hotel Rwanda” (2004). History-based movies are their most powerful when they details heroic acts, as is the case with this movie. In the movie Paul Rusesabagine is a hotel manager that houses over a thousand Tutsi refugees to save them against the Hutu militia.
  8. “There will be Blood” (2007). This history-based movie centers on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of business. It is a story about greed, family and religion all told on a personal level from the characters.
  9. “Gandhi” (1982). This history-based movie is about one of the most influential men of all time. This is a biographical movie on Mahatma Gandhi. The movie follows Gandhi as a lawyer who becomes the leader of the Indian revolts against the British through non-violent protest.
  10. “Inherit the Wind” (1960). This history-based movie is based on the 1925 case against a science teacher who was accused of teaching evolution.
