10 Best Dramatic Romantic Movies

Saturday, February 5 by Ginny Putscher

Although it is not a difficult task to compile a list of the 10 best dramatic romantic movies, a problem occurs because there are so many great movies of this genre and we are limited to only selecting ten. A romantic drama is the type of movie that attracts a female audience and is frequently described as a chick flick by most men, but the majority of the movies listed here can be enjoyed by both sexes.

  1. “Dirty Dancing” takes place in upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains Resort in the '60s where the Houseman family vacation yearly. Baby (Jennifer Grey) agrees to perform a dance routine with Johnny (Patrick Swayze) the resort's dancing instructor, as a favor to Penny, Johnny’s regular dance partner. While learning the routine, Johnny and Baby fall in love.
  2. “A Star is Born” is a romantic drama starring Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand. This beautiful story involves two people who find one another by chance and fall in love.
  3. “Officer and a Gentleman” is a very romantic and dramatic tale that involves Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) and Paula Pokrifki (Debra Winger). Zack is a young Navy aviation candidate who always had to fend for himself and Paula is a young woman that casually meets Zack and falls in love.
  4. “P.S. I Love You” Holly faces the tragic death of her husband, Gerry, in this romantic drama. But with Gerry's, Holly slowly begins to put her life together by receiving a series of letters written before his death. “P.S. I Love You” is one of the best romantic dramas ever.
  5. “Nights in Rodanthe” is a 2008 romantic drama starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane. Gere's character stays an inn in the coastal town of Rodanthe on the outer banks of North Carolina where Lane's character is helping a friend by managing the inn for this fateful weekend.
  6. “The Notebook” is a story about two lovers—Allie and Noah—who meet at a carnival and become completely inseparable. Allie’s parents interfere with this union because they disapprove of Noah’s social status. Years later, Noah and Allie reunite and are still very much in love.
  7. “The Bodyguard” Kevin Costner plays a bodyguard, a former Secret Service agent for Ronald Reagan, hired to protect Whitney Houston's character. Houston plays a pop singer who's receiving death threats. Fate takes over in this romantic drama, and Whitney and Kevin's characters become romantically involved.
  8. “The Bridges of Madison County” is a story about a housewife (Meryl Streep) living in the Madison County who meets a photographer for National Geographic (Clint Eastwood) sent to Madison County to photograph the Roseman Bridge. A love affair begins between the two, but Meryl’s family values win out to this bittersweet temptation.
  9. “Pearl Harbor” is a romantic drama that involves a love triangle of sorts. Capts. Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker are friends who both become Army Air Corps pilots. McCawley is the first to meet Nurse Lt. Evelyn Johnson and both fall in love. While McCawley in fighting in Britain, his plane goes down and is assumed dead. Walker begins to court Johnson and they fall in love, too. As time goes by, McCawley reappears.
  10. “Intersection” is a 1994 romantic drama starring Richard Gere, Sharon Stone and Lolita Davidovich. Gere’s character was married to Stone's character for 16 years before he began an affair with Davidovich's character. The movie flashes back and forth to give a background of the marriage.
