Funny Stoner Movies
There is a long tradition of funny stoner movies and many of them have become iconic. The films in this list usually feature multiple characters that stay constantly stoned and get into various misadventures as a result. The key to this kind of comedy is usually the unpredictable behaviors people demonstrate while under the influence. A stoned character can make an ordinary situation into something truly hilarious.
“Up In Smoke” – The “Cheech and Chong” films are really the granddaddy of the funny stoner movie genre. This one is basically a road trip movie, where the characters steal a van made of THC, which is the chemical in marijuana that makes people high.
“Pineapple Express” – This funny stoner movie is about a couple of guys who get caught up in a criminal conspiracy after they witness a murder while trying to make a drug deal. Of course, they stay stoned while trying to deal with their problems, which leads to great comedy.
“Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle” – This film is about a couple of stoners who decide they absolutely must have a White Castle burger, so they set off on a quest. One of the most memorable scenes in the film involves a meeting with actor Neil Patrick Harris where he plays himself.
“Knocked Up” – This film is about a stoner who gets a news reporter pregnant. She struggles with whether or not to keep the baby while he tries to prove he could make a good father. It’s more heartfelt and interesting than most funny stoner movies.
“Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure” – This is a sci-fi comedy about two teens who travel through time to study history. They meet various famous historical characters and bring them back to the present for their school project. There isn’t that much explicit evidence that these two characters are actually drug users, but the film makes it pretty obvious that they must be using something.
“Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” – Two classic stoner characters who appear in various Kevin Smith films finally get their own movie in this buddy comedy. The characters find out that somebody has been using their likenesses in a comic book and the comic is about to be made into a film. Since they aren't getting paid, they decide to sabotage things.
“The Big Lebowski” – This is a Coen brothers film about an aging stoner who gets caught up in a bit of intrigue when somebody mistakes him for a millionaire. They want him to pay a bunch of money, which he doesn't actually have, so he asks some friends to help him get the money. The key to the film is the performance by Jeff Bridges, which is perfect.
“Dazed and Confused” – Unlike many movies on this list, "Dazed and Confused" isn’t constantly funny, but when it tries to be funny, it's very successful. The movie deals with the 1970s and the drug culture in high schools during that time. We follow the characters through an entire school day at the end of their school year.
“Dude Where’s My Car” – This is one of the least refined funny stoner movies, but it's still funny. It’s about two stoners who wake up and can’t remember how they managed to lose their car during a party. The film follows them as they try to retrace their steps and discover what happened.
“Half Baked” – There is no question that "Half Baked" is a pretty shallow film, but the comedy can't be denied. It’s about a bunch of stoners trying to get a million dollar bail for their friend. Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer are both really funny, which saves the movie from being mediocre.
