Best Comedies Of All Time

Sunday, May 1 by George Root

The best comedies of all time have helped to launch careers, and solidify the status of some people as comedy legends. The best comedies of all time will be around long after the producers and actors who made them are gone. If you are looking for a good laugh, the try watching one of the best comedies of all time, or try watching them all in the same day.

  1. "Young Frankenstein" (1974). This Mel Brooks classic is about the young nephew of Dr. Frankenstein who decides to take up residency at the family castle in Transylvania. At first, he fights the urge to make his own monster. But, after getting motivation from unseen sources that he could not ignore, he makes his own monster and mayhem ensues.
  2. "The Big Lebowski" (1998). All the Dude (Jeff Bridges) wants is his rug back because it really tied his room together. But an long series of strange events take the Dude and his friend Walter (John Goodman) on adventures that include Germans, mobsters and a lot of bowling.
  3. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975). The entire Monty Python comedy troupe was famous before they made this movie, but they were not comedy superstars just yet. The story of King Arthur and his quest for the holy grail helped to create the comedy legend that still is Monty Python.
  4. "A Night at the Opera" (1935). This is one of the best comedies of all time because it contains so many memorable Marx Brothers gags. The two more famous jokes are the overloaded ship cabin and the "Sanity Clause" bit. It is no surprise that comedy legends such as the Marx Brothers were able to make one of the best comedies of all time. The best part about the Marx Brothers is that they have many more movies that could qualify for this list as well.
  5. "Animal House" (1978). This is one of the best comedies of all time because it took everything that was scared about 1960's college life in America and turned it upside down. The run of gags in this movie is endless, and with lines such as "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life" it would be difficult to leave this movie off the list of the best comedies of all time.
